A New, Simpler Way to Safari
Planning a wildlife trip in India often feels like a complex puzzle. You have to book train tickets that might not get confirmed, navigate confusing online portals for safari permits that sell out in minutes, and arrange accommodation separately. To solve
this, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched a new initiative called 'Vandarshan'. This collaboration with the Maharashtra Forest Department streamlines the entire process into a single booking. Announced on International Tiger Day, the programme bundles confirmed train travel, safari permits, accommodation, and local transport into one hassle-free package, opening up the state's wild heart to everyone from seasoned photographers to first-time family adventurers.
The Four-Night, Five-Day Itinerary
The core of the Vandarshan initiative is a series of curated four-night, five-day itineraries. These trips are designed to cater to different interests, including specific options for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, birdwatchers, and families. The journey begins from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) aboard the Vidarbha Express. While initial departures are from Mumbai, more boarding stations are expected to be added later. The package is built around providing a seamless rail-to-safari experience, with local transfers arranged from the nearest railway stations, like Nagpur or Gondia, to the respective park entrances.
Which Parks Are Included?
These packages provide access to six of Maharashtra's premier protected areas, primarily located in the Vidarbha region. The list includes four major Tiger Reserves: Tadoba-Andhari, Pench, Bor, and Navegaon-Nagzira. In addition to these tiger habitats, the tours also cover two important wildlife sanctuaries: Umred-Karhandla and Tipeshwar. This selection offers a comprehensive look at the biodiversity of central India. However, it's worth noting that two of Maharashtra's six tiger reserves, Melghat and Sahyadri, are not part of this specific initiative. The tours are structured to provide guaranteed safari access, which is the most valuable component of the package, especially for popular parks where permits are in high demand.
Focus on Tadoba and Pench
Among the destinations, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve stands out as a prime attraction. Known for its high density of tigers, it is often called 'The Jewel of Vidarbha' and offers some of the best tiger-sighting opportunities in the country. The park's diverse landscape of teak forests, grasslands, and wetlands supports a rich ecosystem. Pench National Park, which straddles the border of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, is another highlight. Immortalised as the setting of Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book', Pench is home to a robust tiger population, leopards, wild dogs, and a variety of deer. A safari here is a chance to step into Mowgli's world and witness nature's drama unfold.
What's Included and The Real Value
The primary appeal of the Vandarshan packages is the convenience and certainty they offer. Each package includes confirmed train tickets, accommodation, all local road transfers between stations and parks, and most importantly, assured safari permits. Securing safari permits, especially for the core zones of parks like Tadoba, can be a significant challenge, with bookings opening 120 days in advance and selling out almost immediately. The cost of a single jeep safari can range from ₹5,800 to over ₹12,800 on weekends, making the guaranteed permit a substantial value beyond just convenience. While IRCTC has not published final per-package pricing, the bundling of these critical components removes the biggest barriers for aspiring wildlife tourists.
How to Book Your Trip
Booking these wildlife packages is handled directly through IRCTC's official tourism portal, irctctourism.com. The website and mobile app are designed to provide a user-friendly experience, allowing travellers to browse itineraries, check inclusions, and make secure payments. To book, you can visit the website, navigate to the 'Packages' section under the 'Holidays' tab, and search for the Vandarshan or Maharashtra wildlife tours. Both registered users and guest users can complete bookings. Given the popularity of wildlife tourism, especially with core zones reopening on October 1st after the monsoon, it's advisable to plan and book well in advance.
