The Mahabaleshwar Monopoly
For most of India, the strawberry is synonymous with one place: Mahabaleshwar. This hill station in Maharashtra, with its cool climate and well-drained soil, accounts for about 85% of the country's entire strawberry production. This geographical concentration
is no accident. Strawberries are temperate fruits, historically unsuited for most of India's tropical and subtropical climates. The unique conditions of the Western Ghats allowed cultivation to flourish here, creating a thriving, GI-tagged industry built around a short seasonal window. But relying so heavily on one small region makes the entire supply chain vulnerable, especially as climate patterns become more unpredictable.
The Problem with Heat
When temperatures rise, especially above 30°C, strawberry plants suffer. Heat stress disrupts everything from growth to fruit quality. Plants produce fewer and smaller flowers, which in turn develop into smaller berries. Pollination becomes less effective, leading to more misshapen fruits. High temperatures also accelerate ripening, meaning the berries have less time to develop their signature size, sweetness, and firmness. Farmers report that excessive heat leads to reduced yields, a drop in sweetness, and a shorter shelf life, which is a major problem for such a perishable fruit. This challenge is intensifying due to rising average temperatures and more frequent heatwaves, threatening the livelihood of growers and the stability of the market.
The Hunt for a Hardy Strawberry
Recognising this existential threat, Indian agricultural scientists are on a mission to create a homegrown, heat-tolerant strawberry. The goal is to develop a cultivar specifically adapted to Indian conditions, reducing the nation's reliance on imported varieties from California and Europe that were never designed for our climate. Research institutions like the Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) have already evaluated numerous foreign varieties to find ones that perform better in warmer plains. Some research efforts are even more advanced. In one notable project, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth has partnered with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to use low-dose gamma irradiation in a breeding experiment, aiming to induce favorable mutations and develop India's first truly indigenous, climate-resilient strawberry.
Defining the 'Super-Strawberry'
Heat tolerance is the main goal, but it's not the only one. The ideal Indian strawberry needs a full suite of desirable traits. Researchers are looking for a plant that delivers not just high yields but also fruit with excellent flavour, uniform size, and a vibrant red colour. Just as importantly, the berry must be firm enough to withstand transportation across long distances and have a decent shelf life, a major hurdle in a country with gaps in its cold chain infrastructure. Resistance to local pests and diseases is another crucial factor. Breeding for all these characteristics at once is a complex balancing act. For example, some varieties that are high in sweetness tend to have softer fruit and a shorter shelf life, a trade-off that researchers are working hard to overcome.
Beyond the Fruit Basket
The development of a successful heat-tolerant strawberry would be revolutionary for Indian agriculture. It could break the geographical confines of Mahabaleshwar, opening up cultivation to new regions across the country, including the plains of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Bihar, where farmers are already experimenting. This would empower a new generation of farmers, providing them with a high-value crop that can boost their incomes. For consumers, a wider cultivation area and a potentially longer growing season could mean more stable supplies and more affordable prices. Ultimately, this research is about more than just a single fruit; it's a forward-looking story of climate adaptation and securing a small but significant part of India's food and economic future.
