At the heart of this transformation is IIT Madras's Bachelor of Science (BS) in Data Science and Applications, a programme that has broken traditional barriers. Unlike typical IIT admissions that require clearing the formidable JEE (Advanced), this programme is open
to anyone who has passed Class 12, regardless of their stream. It operates on a flexible, web-enabled learning model, allowing students to study online while pursuing another degree or working. This approach has attracted tens of thousands of learners, from recent school graduates to seasoned working professionals, creating a diverse and dynamic student body. The curriculum is structured in distinct stages—Foundation, Diploma, and finally, the BS Degree—allowing learners to build skills progressively and even exit at different points with a certificate or diploma.
Where Code Meets Consequence
The core philosophy driving this new wave of programmes is learning by doing. The curriculum is explicitly designed to push students beyond memorising formulas and into building tangible solutions. At the Diploma level, for instance, learners don't just study programming concepts; they undertake projects that involve building functional web applications. This project-based methodology is woven throughout the programme, culminating in significant capstone projects at the degree level where students apply their accumulated knowledge to solve complex, real-world problems. This emphasis ensures that graduates aren't just familiar with data science terminology but have practical experience in applying it.
