A Welcome Return for Wildlife Lovers
Kaziranga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, formally began its new tourist season on October 3, 2026. Every year, the park shuts down during the monsoon as the mighty Brahmaputra River floods its vast grasslands, making roads impassable and allowing the ecosystem
to rejuvenate. This annual cycle is crucial for the health of the park, replenishing its wetlands and supporting the incredible biodiversity it is famous for. The reopening, marked by a ceremony led by Assam's Environment and Forest Minister, signals the revival of tourism activities, which are a vital source of income for local communities. Wildlife enthusiasts can now return to explore one of India's most treasured natural landscapes.
Understanding the Phased Reopening
The park is not opening all at once. To ensure visitor safety and allow time for all tracks to become fully operational after the floods, authorities have planned a phased reopening. On October 3, jeep safaris resumed in two of the park's most popular zones: the Central Range at Kohora and the Western Range at Bagori. These ranges are known for their high density of the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Other zones, including the Eastern (Agaratoli) and Burapahar ranges, are scheduled to open gradually as conditions improve. This staggered approach allows park management to ensure all routes are safe and accessible for safari vehicles following months of heavy rain and natural wear.
Safari Timings and Options
For now, the main way to explore the park is via jeep safari. These are available in two daily slots. The morning safari runs from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM, and the afternoon slot is from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM. The much-loved elephant safaris, which offer a different perspective of the grasslands, are not yet operational. They are expected to resume from November 1, 2026, after the elephants and their mahouts complete necessary preparations and the safari paths are fully secured. Visitors planning a trip in October should focus on the jeep safari experience and book their slots in advance, as the initial opening period is expected to be popular.
What to Expect This Season
Kaziranga is renowned for being home to the world's largest population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros. However, the park's 'Big Five' also includes the Asiatic elephant, Royal Bengal tiger, wild water buffalo, and the eastern swamp deer. While sightings are never guaranteed, the post-monsoon period offers a unique view of the lush, green landscape. However, travellers should be aware that in early October, the tall grasses can sometimes make wildlife spotting more challenging. As the season progresses into November and beyond, the grass will shorten, and animal visibility typically improves. The period from November to April is often considered the best time to visit for optimal wildlife viewing.
Planning Your Trip
With the park now open, planning is key to a smooth visit. Safari bookings can be made through the official government portal. The closest airport to Kaziranga is in Jorhat, about 95 km away, while Guwahati's larger airport is approximately a four to five-hour drive. Most tourist accommodations are located around the Kohora area, which provides convenient access to the Central Range. Beyond the safari, visitors can explore nearby attractions like tea gardens, the Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park, and local villages to get a fuller experience of the region's culture and natural beauty. Authorities are also encouraging tourists to explore new circuits that connect Kaziranga with other nearby destinations.
