Recent reports, most notably from Goldman Sachs, have put a number on the looming transformation: between 8 and 12 percent of India's non-agricultural jobs are at risk of substitution due to Generative AI. This alarming statistic, however, doesn't tell
the whole story. The same analysis clarifies that this is not a prediction of mass unemployment. Instead, it highlights a fundamental shift in the nature of work. The report distinguishes between tasks and jobs. It estimates that Gen-AI could perform 9 to 17 percent of tasks currently done by the non-farm workforce. The 8-12% figure refers to jobs where a high proportion of these tasks could be automated, making the entire role vulnerable to being replaced. It’s a significant number, but it’s crucial to understand it as a risk of displacement, not a certainty of elimination.
Substitution vs. Augmentation: The Real Story
The more optimistic and, according to analysts, more likely scenario for the majority of workers is augmentation, not substitution. The Goldman Sachs report estimates that a much larger portion of the workforce—around 42 to 48 percent—will have their jobs complemented by AI. In this model, AI acts as a powerful assistant, automating repetitive and routine parts of a job. This frees up human workers to focus on tasks requiring critical thinking, creativity, strategic judgment, and interpersonal skills. For example, a financial analyst might use AI to gather and process vast datasets, allowing them to spend more time on interpretation and advising clients. A doctor could use AI for faster diagnostics, giving them more time for patient care. This shift is less about job loss and more about a reallocation of labour and a redefinition of roles.
Which Sectors Are Most Exposed?
The impact of AI will not be felt evenly across the economy. The highest risk of substitution is concentrated in roles with a high degree of repetitive, codifiable tasks. According to reports, sectors like IT-enabled business process services (BPS), alongside postal and telecom services, face a greater substitution risk. Jobs such as routine clerical support, data entry, and some forms of customer service are particularly vulnerable. Conversely, industries that are heavily reliant on physical, manual, or complex interpersonal tasks, such as construction, manufacturing, and mining, are expected to be less directly affected by Generative AI. The key takeaway is that vulnerability is less about the industry itself and more about the nature of the tasks performed within it.
The Rise of New Roles and the Productivity Boom
While some jobs face risk, AI is also a powerful engine for job creation and economic growth. The demand for AI specialists, data scientists, machine learning engineers, and prompt engineers is already surging. A NASSCOM report highlights that India's demand for AI-skilled professionals is expected to cross one million by 2026. Beyond creating new tech roles, AI is predicted to significantly boost productivity. The baseline estimate from Goldman Sachs suggests that widespread AI adoption could lift India's annual labour productivity growth by around 0.4 percentage points over the next decade. This increased efficiency, particularly in knowledge-intensive sectors like healthcare, education, and finance, can fuel economic growth, creating new forms of demand and, consequently, new jobs that we can't yet imagine.
The National Skill Imperative
The transition to an AI-powered economy presents a monumental challenge: upskilling the workforce. Reports from NASSCOM and the World Economic Forum highlight a significant gap between the demand for AI skills and their availability in the Indian workforce. To navigate this shift successfully, a concerted effort is needed from government, corporations, and individuals. For employees, the focus must be on lifelong learning and developing AI fluency. For companies, the priority is shifting from volume hiring to selective recruitment focused on problem-solving and adaptability, alongside robust internal training programs. Academic institutions are also being urged to reform curricula to move beyond rote learning and focus on foundational skills that will allow graduates to work alongside AI. As one NASSCOM report noted, employers are increasingly preferring demonstrable skills and certifications over traditional degrees.
