From 16 to 24 Coaches
Indian Railways is actively developing plans to expand its next generation of sleeper trains from the standard 16-coach configuration to longer 22 and 24-coach versions. This strategic shift targets the high-demand overnight travel market, where a single
train with more berths can make a significant dent in passenger waitlists. The move primarily involves two key upcoming train types: the premium Vande Bharat sleepers and the affordable, non-AC Amrit Bharat Express. While the popular Vande Bharat chair cars are typically 16-coach sets, the sleeper variants are being designed with this expanded capacity in mind right from the drawing board, signalling a major push to accommodate more travellers on every single journey.
A Two-Pronged Modernisation
This expansion is not a one-size-fits-all solution. For premium travellers, the Vande Bharat sleeper trains are set to offer a Rajdhani-like experience but with modern amenities. Plans for the 24-coach version include a dedicated pantry car for better onboard catering, more toilets, and improved interiors, enhancing comfort on long-haul routes. For the common person, the Amrit Bharat Express represents a significant upgrade. These 22-coach trains are already in service and utilise an innovative 'push-pull' technology. With a locomotive at each end, these trains accelerate and decelerate faster, reducing journey times and improving operational efficiency, all while providing a cost-effective travel option for the masses.
The Engineering and Infrastructure Hurdles
Adding more coaches to a train isn't as simple as just linking them together. A primary challenge is the length of platforms at thousands of stations across the country, many of which were built for shorter trains. Accommodating a 22 or 24-coach train requires significant infrastructure upgrades. Furthermore, longer and heavier trains demand more power. This is where the push-pull technology of the Amrit Bharat becomes crucial, as it provides the necessary power and control for a longer rake. For the Vande Bharat sleepers, which are distributed-power trainsets, extending the length requires a complete redesign of its complex electrical and control systems. Indian Railways is planning a phased upgrade of its network to handle these new giants of the track.
What This Means For Passengers
The ultimate goal of this initiative is to directly benefit the passenger. A 24-coach Vande Bharat sleeper could accommodate hundreds more passengers than its 16-coach counterpart, drastically increasing the availability of confirmed berths on popular routes. For instance, early specifications suggest a 24-coach sleeper could have over 1,400 berths. This means fewer people stuck on waitlists, especially during peak festival seasons. The improved acceleration from push-pull technology and the higher speed potential of Vande Bharat trains could also lead to shorter journey times. Coupled with modern amenities like better toilets, sealed gangways to reduce noise, and CCTV for security, this move represents a significant step towards a more comfortable and accessible railway network for all.
