A New Way to Binge Reddit
Reddit has begun a limited experiment that transforms some of its most popular text-based posts into short, AI-powered videos. The feature, which started rolling out on the web on August 17, 2026, with mobile apps following, adds a “Play” button alongside
the traditional “Read” option on select posts. When activated, the post and a selection of its top comments are read aloud by synthetic voices. Visually, the video shows screenshots of the post itself, with words lighting up karaoke-style as they are narrated to keep the viewer engaged. To ensure transparency, each video is marked with a label stating, “Real conversation voiced by AI.”
How the AI Brings Posts to Life
The technology uses multi-voice text-to-speech AI to create a conversational feel, assigning different voices to the original poster and the various commenters. The visuals are not AI-generated imagery but rather a clean presentation of the text itself, functioning like dynamic subtitles. For now, the feature is being tested on a manually curated selection of English-language posts in a limited number of subreddits, such as r/boardgames and r/explainlikeimfive. Reddit has even applied this technology to older, popular threads, including an eight-year-old post about road trip games that was turned into a roughly three-minute video. This allows the platform to tap into its vast archive of content, not just new posts.
Reclaiming the Reddit-to-Video Trend
This move is a direct response to a popular trend that has flourished on other platforms like TikTok and YouTube. For years, third-party creators have built entire channels around reading Reddit posts aloud, often layering the narration over unrelated gameplay or other videos. These videos attract millions of views, generating engagement and revenue that Reddit itself never saw. During a July 2026 earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged this “emerging content type” and signaled the company's intent to create its own native solution. By integrating this feature directly, Reddit aims to keep users on its platform and reclaim the audience that currently consumes its content elsewhere.
More Than Just Video
Reddit is framing the experiment as a play for accessibility and convenience. In a statement, the company noted that users might want to listen to Reddit threads while exercising, running errands, or commuting—transforming the text-based platform into a listenable experience. This fits into Reddit's broader strategy to modernize its platform and integrate more video. The company introduced video comments in June 2026, which already account for over 10% of all video posts, demonstrating a clear appetite for more dynamic content among its user base. The ultimate goal is to make Reddit “more accessible and immersive in more moments,” according to a company spokesperson.
An Experiment with Open Questions
While the feature is innovative, it comes with potential challenges. Early tests are deliberately narrow, focusing on text-only posts to avoid complexities with images or GIFs. There are also risks of AI mispronouncing usernames or niche terminology, or the automated selection of comments failing to capture the true context or humor of a thread. It is not yet clear how Reddit is selecting posts or whether users can opt out of having their words narrated by an AI. The company has stated that it will evaluate user feedback from this limited test before deciding on a wider rollout, making this a crucial period for determining the future of AI-driven content on the platform.
