What Makes a Geosynchronous Satellite Special?
Most earth observation satellites that capture high-resolution images orbit just a few hundred kilometres above us. They move quickly, covering different strips of the planet in successive passes, which means it can take days for them to revisit the same
spot. A geosynchronous satellite is different. Placed in a high orbit approximately 36,000 kilometres away, it moves at the same speed as the Earth's rotation. This allows it to appear stationary over one location, providing a constant and unwavering gaze over a vast geographical area. Think of it as the difference between a fast-moving drone and a persistent security camera. While low-orbit satellites provide incredibly detailed snapshots, a geosynchronous imager offers the big picture, continuously.
A Landmark Achievement After Setbacks
The success of EOS-05 is a story of resilience for ISRO. A previous attempt to place a similar satellite, EOS-03 (also known as GISAT-1), into orbit in August 2021 ended in failure due to a technical anomaly in the launch vehicle's cryogenic upper stage. That setback delayed a crucial national capability. The successful launch of EOS-05 aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket is therefore a powerful comeback. It demonstrates ISRO's mastery over the complex technologies required for such demanding missions and places India in an elite club of nations with the capability to operate a geostationary imaging platform.
A Game-Changer for Disaster Management
For a country prone to natural disasters like cyclones, floods, and forest fires, the ability to monitor developing situations in near real-time is a life-saving asset.
