A Milestone in an Instant
On July 16, 2026, a new chapter in Mahindra's history was written as its advanced manufacturing facility in Chakan, near Pune, produced its three-millionth vehicle. The landmark vehicle was a BE 6, a flagship electric SUV from the company's futuristic
'Born Electric' (BE) range, signifying a major pivot towards next-generation mobility. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the speed. The plant took 107 months to build its first million vehicles but produced the latest million in just 27 months—nearly four times faster. This acceleration reflects not just booming customer demand but also the incredible evolution of the plant's efficiency and technological prowess.
The Car That Signals the Future
The choice of the BE 6 as the milestone vehicle is no coincidence; it's a strategic statement. This model is part of Mahindra’s ambitious push into the electric vehicle space, built on its dedicated INGLO platform. The INGLO architecture, which uses components from Volkswagen's MEB platform, is a 'born-electric' skateboard design, meaning it was created from the ground up exclusively for EVs. This approach allows for optimal battery placement, a flat floor for maximised cabin space, and superior driving dynamics. Vehicles on this platform are designed to be high-performance, software-driven machines capable of over-the-air (OTA) updates, 5G connectivity, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), positioning them as connected devices on wheels.
Inside the Chakan Powerhouse
Since it began operations in December 2009, the Chakan plant has transformed into a cornerstone of Mahindra's global ambitions. Spread across 657 acres, it's an integrated hub of advanced manufacturing. The facility is a showcase of Industry 4.0, employing artificial intelligence, IoT, 5G connectivity, and approximately 1,500 robots to achieve over 98% automation in its body shop. This high degree of flexibility allows it to produce an astonishing 19 different models and over 450 variants across passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and now, a growing range of EVs. The plant not only serves the Indian market but also exports to countries like South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, making it a critical asset for Mahindra's global footprint.
Sustainability at Scale
Beyond its production numbers, the Chakan plant sets a benchmark for responsible manufacturing. Mahindra has deeply integrated sustainability into its operations. More than 50% of the plant's total energy needs are met by renewable sources. Crucially, the manufacturing line for its electric vehicles runs on 100% renewable energy. The facility is also certified as 'Zero Waste to Landfill' and is 'water positive', meaning it returns more water to nature than it consumes, recharging approximately 9.91 lakh kilolitres of rainwater annually. These initiatives demonstrate a commitment to reducing the environmental footprint that goes far beyond just producing zero-emission vehicles.
