Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, India: A Heritage Icon
No list of architectural wonders would be complete without Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). This UNESCO World Heritage site is a breathtaking example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture blended with traditional Indian design.
Originally named Victoria Terminus, the station was designed by British architect F. W. Stevens and completed in 1887. Its magnificent stone dome, turrets, pointed arches, and intricate carvings make it a living monument. The collaboration between British architects and Indian artisans resulted in a unique building that has become a symbol of Mumbai. Far more than just one of India's busiest railway stations, CSMT stands as a testament to the city's rich history and architectural grandeur, serving millions of commuters daily while preserving its historic charm.
Toledo Station, Italy: An Underwater Universe
Descending into Naples' Toledo Metro Station is like plunging into an ethereal, art-filled ocean. Designed by Spanish architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca, the station is renowned for its "Crater de Luz" (Crater of Light), a massive cone that funnels natural light deep into the subterranean levels. As passengers ride the escalator, they are enveloped by a glittering mosaic of blue and white Bisazza tiles, creating the magical sensation of being underwater. Part of Naples' 'Art Stations' project, Toledo integrates works from international artists, such as William Kentridge's mosaics depicting Neapolitan history. The station beautifully proves that everyday infrastructure can be transformed into an immersive public art gallery.
World Trade Center Transportation Hub, USA: A Symbol of Hope
In the heart of New York City stands the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, a structure that is as much a memorial as it is a station. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, its striking centerpiece, the Oculus, is formed by white steel ribs that curve upwards like a bird's wings, a symbol of a dove being released from a child's hands. The design is deeply tied to the events of September 11, 2001. Each year on 9/11, an operable skylight opens, allowing a beam of light to illuminate the main hall, a poignant reminder of resilience. Serving over a million people a week, the hub connects 12 subway lines and the PATH rail system, all while providing a serene and light-filled public space that Calatrava described as being supported by 'columns of light.'
Monte Sant'Angelo Station, Italy: A Sculptural Journey
Another gem from Naples, the recently opened Monte Sant'Angelo Station, was highlighted on the 2026 Prix Versailles list of the world's most beautiful stations. Conceived by acclaimed artist Anish Kapoor and Future Systems, the entrance is a monumental, vortex-like sculpture of Corten steel that appears to pull the earth downward. This dramatic entryway leads passengers nearly 50 metres underground, turning the simple act of entering a station into a profound artistic experience. The design is reportedly inspired by Dante's Inferno, offering a sculptural and almost mythical journey for commuters. It’s a powerful example of how public infrastructure can embrace avant-garde art, creating unforgettable urban landmarks.
LAX/Metro Transit Center, USA: A Model for the Future
Also featured on the 2026 Prix Versailles selection, the LAX/Metro Transit Center in Los Angeles is a forward-thinking hub designed for sustainability and connectivity. Praised for its light and airy feel, the station features sweeping canopies and glass ceilings that prioritise natural ventilation and shade. Designed by Grimshaw Architects, the facility seamlessly connects the C and K Metro lines with bus services and, eventually, the airport's people mover. Its design incorporates solar panels that supply about half of the building's energy needs, demonstrating a commitment to environmentally conscious architecture. It represents a new vision for transport hubs: not just as places to pass through, but as integrated, sustainable, and passenger-friendly public spaces.
