A New Lifeline on the Rails
Central Railway has launched a new daily express train connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with Sawantwadi Road in the Sindhudurg district. The inaugural service was flagged off on September 3, 2026, with regular daily services
commencing on September 8, just ahead of the busy Ganeshotsav festival period. Operating as train numbers 15087 and 15088, the service covers the 510-kilometre distance with 22 stops, including key stations like Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Roha, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal. The train features a mix of AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, AC 3-Tier, sleeper, and general second-class coaches to cater to a wide range of passengers.
Bridging a Persistent Connectivity Gap
For residents of the Konkan region and the millions from the area living in Mumbai, direct and daily connectivity has been a persistent challenge. Until now, travel often meant relying on long-distance express trains that had limited stops and were often overcrowded, or navigating slower, more arduous journeys by road. The Konkan Railway is a single-line corridor for much of its length, which creates significant bottlenecks and frequent delays, especially during peak seasons. This new daily service is designed to alleviate some of that pressure, providing a dependable option for daily commuters, traders, students, and families. Opened fully in 1998, the line was a monumental engineering feat but has struggled with capacity issues due to its predominantly single-track nature. The long-term vision for the region involves doubling the tracks to increase capacity, a project that experts say is necessary to fully unlock the Konkan's economic potential.
