The Aravallis in Full Bloom
The transformation of Jaipur and its surrounding landscapes during the monsoon is nothing short of magical. From July to September, the region receives its much-awaited rainfall, which breathes new life into the dry, deciduous forests of the Aravalli
range. This season turns the rugged, rocky terrain into a verdant wonderland, making it an increasingly popular time for locals and tourists to explore the outdoors. The air becomes crisp, the temperature drops to a more pleasant level, and the scent of wet earth fills the surroundings. This unique combination of history and revitalised nature offers a trekking experience that is distinct from any other in India, revealing a side of Rajasthan that many have never seen.
Hathni Kund: The Waterfall Trek
Arguably the most popular monsoon trek in Jaipur, Hathni Kund is famous for its seasonal waterfall that cascades beautifully during the rains. The trail, often called the Water Valley Trek, starts from Charan Mandir near Nahargarh Fort and winds through the forest for about 1.5 to 3 kilometres. It's a relatively easy trek, making it suitable for beginners and families. The path takes you through thick greenery and past ancient ruins before leading to the stunning kund (pond) and the adjacent Hathuneshwar Mahadev Temple. The sight of the waterfall in its full glory and the lush surroundings make it a rewarding experience for every nature enthusiast. Given its popularity, the trail can be busy on weekends.
Bhuteshwar Nath Mahadev: A Spiritual Hike
For those seeking a blend of adventure and spirituality, the Bhuteshwar Nath Mahadev trek is an excellent choice. This trail is considered one of the oldest near Jaipur and is less crowded than others, offering a more peaceful journey. The trek is of moderate difficulty and covers around 7 kilometres round trip, taking about four to five hours to complete. It typically starts near Nahargarh Biological Park or from Sagar Lake behind Amer Fort, leading through dense forested paths and rocky inclines to a centuries-old Shiva temple nestled deep in the hills. The serene atmosphere of the temple combined with the panoramic views of the Aravallis makes this trek a truly special and grounding experience.
Chulgiri Hills: For Panoramic Views
The Chulgiri trek offers a more challenging and rustic experience, rewarding hikers with breathtaking panoramic views. This trail leads to the Digamber Jain temple complex perched atop the hill. Trekkers can choose between a rugged, naturally carved path through the forest or a winding staircase, both of which promise stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape. The trek is particularly beautiful during the monsoon when the hills are covered in a blanket of green. It's an ideal choice for those looking for a good workout combined with spiritual solace and magnificent photo opportunities from the summit.
Essential Monsoon Trekking Tips
While trekking in the monsoon is a beautiful experience, it requires preparation. The trails can be slippery and muddy, so wearing trekking shoes with a good grip is essential. It's advisable to carry a lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho, a water bottle to stay hydrated, and insect repellent. Always check the weather forecast before you leave and try to start your trek early in the day. For less-traveled routes, it’s safer to go with a group or a guide. Packing essentials in waterproof bags or dry bags will protect your electronics and a spare set of clothes from the rain.
