Unlike most Earth observation satellites that circle the globe in low orbits and get only fleeting glimpses of any one area, EOS-05 is different. It operates from a geosynchronous orbit, which means it stays parked over the Indian subcontinent, moving
in sync with the Earth's rotation. This unique position allows it to do something revolutionary: provide near-continuous monitoring of the Indian landmass and its surrounding oceans. While low-orbit satellites provide incredibly detailed images, they might only pass over a specific location once every few days. EOS-05 trades some of that pin-sharp resolution for persistence, giving it the ability to image the entire country roughly every 30 minutes and focus on specific areas of interest as frequently as every five minutes. This shift from periodic snapshots to persistent surveillance is a strategic game-changer for the nation.
Transforming Disaster Management
For a country prone to natural calamities, the ability to monitor developing threats in near real-time is invaluable. This is where EOS-05 has made its most immediate impact. The satellite's constant watch helps in tracking the rapid development of cyclones, floods, landslides, and large-scale forest fires. By capturing frequent images, authorities can get a clearer picture of a cyclone's path, the extent of flood inundation, or the spread of a wildfire, enabling faster and more effective response measures. This doesn't replace high-resolution military spy satellites but complements them by providing a persistent, wide-area overview that can detect unusual movements or changes in terrain.
