What Exactly Are Amrit Bharat Trains?
Launched as an affordable alternative to premium services, the Amrit Bharat Express is designed for the common person, focusing on long-distance routes. These are not your typical passenger trains. They are fully non-AC, featuring both sleeper and general
unreserved coaches, but with a host of modern upgrades. The key innovation is the 'push-pull' technology, where a locomotive is placed at each end of the train. This allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, cutting down on overall journey time. For passengers, this means a smoother, quicker, and jerk-free ride. The trains are designed to offer a Vande Bharat-like experience but at a more economical price point, with fares only about 15-17% higher than standard mail or express trains.
The New Lifelines to Mumbai
Of the seven new services approved by the Railway Board in August 2026, four will directly benefit Mumbai, connecting the financial capital to key towns in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. These routes are specifically designed to cater to high-demand corridors, easing travel for migrant workers, pilgrims, and families. The new connections are: Gorakhpur-Bandra (T), Subedarganj-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Prayagraj-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and Prayagraj-Udhna, which is near Surat and well-connected to Mumbai.
A Closer Look at the Routes
The Gorakhpur-Bandra (T) Amrit Bharat Express (15085/15086) will provide a weekly service linking eastern UP with Mumbai. Key stops include Kanpur, Agra Fort, Kota, Ratlam, Vadodara, and Surat before terminating at Bandra. The Subedarganj-LTT Express (14121/14122) will connect the Prayagraj region with Mumbai via cities like Satna, Jabalpur, Itarsi, and Nashik Road. Another service, the Prayagraj-LTT Express (20436/20435), offers a more direct weekly connection via a similar central Indian route. Lastly, the Prayagraj-Udhna Express (20437/20438) will improve connectivity to Gujarat's industrial belt, which has a significant commuter flow to and from Mumbai.
A Better Passenger Experience
Beyond speed, Amrit Bharat trains are about enhancing comfort and safety. The coaches feature fully covered vestibules for safe movement between carriages, CCTV cameras for security, and modern bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps. For the digitally connected traveller, every seat is equipped with mobile charging sockets. The interiors have also been thoughtfully designed with better aesthetics for seats, cushioned luggage racks, and improved ladders for accessing upper berths, making the long journey more comfortable. An aerosol-based fire suppression system adds an extra layer of safety.
What This Means for Mumbai
The introduction of these services is a strategic move to decongest existing, over-burdened train routes and provide reliable, affordable travel options. It directly addresses the needs of a large population that travels between the hinterland and the metropolis for work and family commitments. By connecting major economic and religious hubs like Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, and the industrial corridor of Gujarat directly to Mumbai, these trains are expected to boost commerce and tourism. While the official launch dates are yet to be announced, the approval of these routes marks a significant step forward in modernising rail travel for all.
