Why Monsoon Weather Stresses Your Skin
The shift from scorching summer to humid monsoon can be confusing for your skin. The primary culprit is the dramatic increase in humidity. This moisture-laden air signals your skin's sebaceous glands to produce more oil, leading to a greasy feeling. This excess
oil, combined with sweat and environmental pollutants carried by rainwater, creates a perfect storm for clogged pores, acne, and blackheads. Furthermore, the constant dampness can weaken your skin's natural protective barrier, making it an ideal breeding ground for bacterial and fungal infections, which is why issues like itchiness, rashes, and folliculitis become more common during this season.
Rethink Your Cleansing Routine
When your face feels perpetually oily, the first instinct is to wash it repeatedly. However, dermatologists warn against this. Over-washing, especially with harsh, stripping cleansers, can damage your skin's natural barrier. This disruption can paradoxically trigger your glands to produce even more oil to compensate. Instead of washing more, wash smarter. Switch from heavy, cream-based cleansers to a gentle, pH-balanced foaming or gel-based face wash. These formulations are effective at removing grime and excess sebum without leaving your skin feeling tight and dry. Cleansing thoroughly twice a day—once in the morning and once at night—is sufficient to keep your skin clean and balanced.
Moisturise to Balance, Not Clog
Skipping moisturiser is one of the most common mistakes people make during the monsoon, believing their oily skin doesn't need it. However, humidity does not equal hydration. In fact, when your skin is dehydrated, it can overproduce oil to make up for the lack of moisture. The key is to choose the right kind of moisturiser. Ditch the thick, heavy creams you might have used in winter and opt for something lightweight and non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores. Gel-based or water-based moisturisers are excellent choices for humid weather. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which hydrate the skin by drawing in moisture without adding any greasiness.
Never Skip Sunscreen, Even on Cloudy Days
Don't let the cloud cover fool you; your sunscreen is non-negotiable even during the heaviest downpour. While clouds block some visible sunlight, they do not stop harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from reaching your skin. Up to 80% of the sun's UV radiation can penetrate through clouds. In particular, UVA rays—which are responsible for premature ageing, fine lines, and pigmentation—are present at a consistent strength year-round. Constant exposure without protection is a leading cause of skin damage that may only become visible later. For the monsoon, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Look for lightweight, gel-based, or water-resistant formulas that feel comfortable in the humidity and won’t wash off easily.
Extra Care for a Healthy Glow
Beyond the core three steps, a few other habits can help. Gentle exfoliation once or twice a week is crucial to slough away the build-up of dead skin cells that contribute to a dull complexion. This helps keep pores clear and allows your other skincare products to work more effectively. Also, be mindful of fungal infections, which thrive in damp conditions. Always ensure you dry your skin thoroughly, especially in skin folds, and change out of damp clothes as quickly as possible. Wearing loose, breathable fabrics like cotton can also make a significant difference in preventing skin irritation and infections.
