In its latest Economic Index, AI safety and research company Anthropic analyzed approximately one million conversations with its AI assistant, Claude, to understand how the technology is being adopted globally. The results were revealing: India emerged
as the second-largest source of Claude usage in the world, surpassed only by the United States. According to the data, India accounts for a significant share of global conversations, placing it ahead of countries like Brazil, Japan, and the United Kingdom. This top-level finding confirms what many in the tech industry have suspected: India is not just participating in the AI revolution; it is becoming one of its most important global hubs of activity.
Volume vs. Intensity
While the number two ranking is a powerful headline, the story behind the numbers is more nuanced. India’s high placement in total usage is significantly propelled by its massive population. When the data is adjusted on a per-capita basis, which measures the intensity of adoption relative to the working-age population, India ranks much lower, at 101st out of 116 countries. This distinction is crucial. It suggests that while a large number of conversations originate from India in absolute terms, the average person's engagement with AI is still in its early stages. The opportunity for growth, therefore, is immense, as adoption has yet to spread widely across the country's vast population. The current activity, however, is highly concentrated and offers clear clues about the future.
A Nation of Builders and Learners
Perhaps the most compelling insight from the study is not just how much Indians are using AI, but how they are using it. The data shows a strong orientation towards professional and educational tasks rather than casual entertainment. A remarkable 51.3% of Claude usage in India is work-related, compared to a global average of 46%. Even more specifically, India ranks first globally for the share of AI use dedicated to software-related tasks, which account for 45.2% of conversations. Users are heavily focused on coding, web development, and debugging. Beyond work, education is another key driver, with homework and coursework making up a substantial portion of interactions. This pattern highlights a user base that views AI as a powerful tool for productivity, skill enhancement, and economic advancement.
The Productivity Power-Up
The focus on professional tasks is yielding tangible results. According to Anthropic's report, Indian users are achieving a significant productivity boost. On average, they complete tasks with AI in just 14.8 minutes that would typically take 3.8 hours to do manually—a 15x speedup. This efficiency gain is even higher than the global average of a 12x speedup. This indicates that Indian professionals are not only adopting AI but are becoming adept at delegating complex and time-consuming work to it, allowing them to focus on higher-value activities. This trend aligns with broader findings that Indian companies are global leaders in their readiness to adopt AI, even as they navigate challenges like skills gaps and implementation hurdles.
India's AI Hotbeds
The AI boom is not uniformly distributed across India. Usage is heavily concentrated in states with strong, established IT sectors and economic hubs. Maharashtra, home to Mumbai, leads the country, followed closely by Tamil Nadu (Chennai), Karnataka (Bengaluru), and Delhi. Together, these four regions account for more than half of all Claude activity in India. This geographical clustering underscores the deep connection between the nation's world-class IT services industry and its rapid embrace of next-generation AI tools. The engineers, developers, and tech professionals who have powered India's digital growth for decades are now at the forefront of integrating AI into their daily workflows, setting the pace for the rest of the country.
