Why Verification is a Non-Negotiable Step
Filing your income tax return is a two-stage process. The first is submitting your income and tax details on the e-filing portal. The second, and equally important, stage is verifying that you are indeed the person who has filed the return. The Income
Tax Department treats any ITR that has been filed but not verified as invalid. This means, in the eyes of the law, it is equivalent to not having filed a return at all. Consequently, you could face penalties for non-filing, be unable to carry forward losses, and experience significant delays in receiving any legitimate tax refunds. The verification must be completed within 30 days of filing your return. This shorter window, reduced from the previous 120 days, makes timely action more critical than ever.
The Digital Route: E-Verifying in Minutes
The quickest and most recommended method is online e-verification. The Income Tax Department offers several digital ways to complete this process instantly, saving you the hassle of postage and potential transit delays. The most popular methods include: Aadhaar OTP: If your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar and your PAN is linked to Aadhaar, this is the simplest option. An OTP is sent to your registered mobile number, which you can use to verify your return instantly. Net Banking: You can log in to your net banking portal and access the income tax e-filing section to verify your ITR. The system automatically redirects you to the tax portal for a seamless verification process. Bank Account or Demat Account EVC: You can generate an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) through a pre-validated bank account or a Demat account. The EVC is sent to your registered mobile number and email ID and can be used to complete the verification. Digital Signature Certificate (DSC): This is primarily used by corporate taxpayers and individuals for whom a tax audit is applicable. It involves using a registered DSC to sign the return digitally.
The Physical Path: Sending the ITR-V
For those who cannot or prefer not to use digital methods, the option to physically verify the return still exists. This involves sending a signed copy of the ITR-V (Income Tax Return-Verification) form to the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru. An ITR-V is a one-page acknowledgement document generated after you e-file your return without a digital signature. To complete the process, you must download the ITR-V from the e-filing portal, print it, and sign it in blue ink. It is crucial not to staple the form or sign on the barcode. The signed document must be sent via ordinary or speed post (not courier) to: Centralized Processing Centre, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru - 560500, Karnataka. This must reach the CPC within 30 days of filing your ITR.
Consequences of Missing the Verification Deadline
Failing to verify your ITR within the 30-day window has serious repercussions. As mentioned, the return is declared invalid. This means the Income Tax Department will not process it. Any tax refund you were expecting will be blocked. More importantly, you will be subject to the consequences of not filing a return, which can include a late filing fee of up to ₹5,000. If you miss the deadline, you may need to file a condonation of delay request, providing a valid reason for the delay. Only if the Income Tax Department approves this request can you proceed with the verification. If the request is rejected, your original filing is void, and you may have to file a belated return, which comes with its own set of penalties and limitations.
