A New Class of Modern Travel
The Amrit Bharat Express is a relatively new category of train designed specifically for long-distance travel, offering a practical alternative to premium, fully air-conditioned services. These trains are aimed at providing an upgraded experience for passengers
in non-AC sleeper and general unreserved coaches. The core idea is to deliver a comfortable, safe, and efficient journey without a hefty price tag, making it an ideal choice for millions of students, migrant workers, and families who rely on the railways for cross-country travel. Unlike the Vande Bharat, which focuses on high-speed, intercity chair-car travel, the Amrit Bharat is built for overnight and multi-day journeys, prioritizing comfort and affordability for the common passenger.
The Seven New Connections
The latest announcement greenlights seven new weekly services that will weave a tighter web of connectivity across the nation, linking major industrial, educational, and population hubs. The approved routes are: 1. Gorakhpur to Delhi: A regularised service strengthening the link between eastern Uttar Pradesh and the national capital. 2. Gorakhpur to Bandra Terminus (Mumbai): Connecting UP with the financial capital via key stops like Kota and Vadodara. 3. Dhanbad to Coimbatore: A vital southern corridor linking the coal capital of Jharkhand with industrial hubs in Tamil Nadu. 4. Charlapalli (Hyderabad) to Gorakhpur: A new artery connecting Telangana to Uttar Pradesh through central India. 5. Prayagraj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): A direct connection between the spiritual city of Prayagraj and Mumbai. 6. Prayagraj to Udhna (Surat): This service will benefit passengers travelling between Uttar Pradesh and the commercial centre of Surat in Gujarat. 7. Subedarganj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): Another route to Mumbai, enhancing connectivity for passengers from the Prayagraj region.
Smarter Technology, Smoother Journeys
One of the standout features of the Amrit Bharat Express is its use of "push-pull" technology. Each train is powered by two locomotives, one at the front and one at the rear. This seemingly simple change has a major impact. It allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, which helps in reducing overall travel time. Furthermore, it eliminates the time-consuming process of changing the engine's direction at terminal stations, saving precious minutes at every reversal point. This configuration also contributes to a smoother, jerk-free ride, enhancing passenger comfort throughout the journey. The trains are designed to operate at speeds up to 130 kmph, ensuring they are not just affordable but also efficient.
Upgraded Amenities on a Budget
Stepping inside an Amrit Bharat coach reveals a significant upgrade from conventional non-AC coaches. The interiors are designed with passenger comfort in mind. Berths and seats are cushioned and more ergonomic for long journeys. For the digitally connected traveler, each passenger has access to mobile charging sockets. Other thoughtful additions include foldable snack tables, bottle holders, and radium illumination flooring strips for better visibility at night. The gangways between coaches are fully sealed, which reduces noise and increases safety while moving between compartments. Even the bio-toilets have been modernized with an improved flushing system and better hygiene standards, addressing a long-standing concern for long-distance rail passengers.
