To understand the Strait of Hormuz is to understand the logistics of the global economy. Before the current crisis began in early 2026, about 21 million barrels of oil passed through this waterway every single day. That figure represents roughly a fifth
of the world’s total oil consumption and a quarter of all oil traded by sea. The majority of these shipments, around 80-89%, are destined for Asia, supplying the powerhouse economies of China, Japan, South Korea, and, critically, India. But it's not just oil. The strait is also the exit route for nearly 20% of the globe's liquefied natural gas (LNG), with Qatar, the world's second-largest LNG exporter, almost entirely dependent on this passage. At its narrowest point, the strait is only 21 miles (34 km) wide, with shipping confined to two lanes, each just two miles wide, for inbound and outbound traffic. This geographical constraint funnels a colossal amount of the world's energy into a tiny, easily disrupted channel.
A 'Pre-War' State of Tension
The headline's reference to a "pre-war" scale is not hyperbole; it reflects a grim reality that began in late February 2026. Following U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, the waterway has been effectively shut down. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared the passage closed to adversaries, laid sea mines, and began attacking commercial vessels. As of early August 2026, traffic is a fraction of its normal volume. While before the conflict some 130-140 ships would transit daily, recent data shows that number has dwindled to as low as four vessels on some days. While major economies released strategic petroleum reserves to cushion the initial blow, the disruption to LNG supplies is harder to replace, as other global producers are already running near maximum capacity. The ripple effects extend beyond energy. The Persian Gulf region accounts for a significant portion of the world's traded fertilizers, and the blockage has raised concerns about global food production. For the Gulf nations themselves—like Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE—the closure has choked off imports of food and household goods, forcing them to rely on expensive air freight and driving up domestic inflation. The crisis has demonstrated that there are no easy or cheap alternatives to Hormuz; rerouting by land or sea is either impractical for such large volumes or prohibitively expensive.
Why Hormuz Matters to India
For India, the stakes could not be higher. The nation imports a vast majority of its crude oil and about half of its natural gas. Before the crisis, more than two-thirds of India's crude imports and about half of its LNG needs were met via shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Any prolonged disruption directly impacts India's energy security, leading to higher fuel prices for consumers and businesses. This affects everything from transport costs to electricity generation and the price of everyday goods. The increased costs of freight and insurance add another layer of economic strain. The crisis impacts Indian trade with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and threatens supply chain stability, which is crucial for India's manufacturing and export ambitions. While India maintains strategic reserves, a long-term closure of this vital corridor represents a significant threat to its economic stability and growth.
