The Allure of Alpine Flight
The French Alps are a world-class destination for paragliding, and for good reason. The combination of high mountain terrain, reliable weather patterns, and stunning scenery creates the perfect playground for free flight. Unlike the fleeting glimpse from
a plane window, paragliding is an immersive experience. You hear nothing but the rush of the wind, feel the gentle lift of air currents known as thermals, and see landscapes unfold in breathtaking panoramic detail. It's a mix of serene beauty and quiet exhilaration, allowing you to connect with the mountain environment in a way that’s simply not possible from the ground.
Iconic Launch Points for Unforgettable Views
Two locations stand out as global hotspots for Alpine paragliding: Chamonix and Annecy. Chamonix offers an unparalleled, high-altitude drama. Taking off from sites like Planpraz on Le Brévent, you are immediately greeted with staggering views of the Mont Blanc massif, the highest peak in the Alps. You'll soar over glaciers and the famous Chamonix valley, witnessing a raw, powerful landscape from thousands of feet in the air. In contrast, Annecy provides a different kind of beauty. Launching from the Col de la Forclaz, you fly over the pristine, turquoise waters of Lake Annecy, framed by lush green mountains. It is one of the busiest and most famous flying sites in Europe, known for its reliable conditions and postcard-perfect scenery.
Your First Flight: The Tandem Experience
You don’t need any experience to take to the skies. The gateway for nearly all beginners is a tandem flight, where you are securely strapped into a comfortable harness in front of a certified professional pilot. The pilot handles every aspect of the flight, from takeoff to steering and landing. Your job is simple: after a pre-flight briefing, you'll run a few steps on a gentle slope during takeoff until the wing lifts you both gracefully into the air. Once airborne, you just sit back and enjoy the ride. Flights typically last between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the weather conditions and the package you choose.
What to Expect in the Air
Many first-timers are surprised by how peaceful the experience is. There's no sensation of falling or a stomach-dropping feeling. Instead, it feels like floating. The pilot will navigate invisible columns of rising warm air, called thermals, to gain altitude, sometimes spiraling upwards alongside eagles and other birds. The air is often cool, so dressing in layers with a windbreaker and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended. Many pilots offer an 'acrobatics' option toward the end of the flight, including thrilling spirals and wingovers for those seeking an adrenaline rush, but this is entirely optional. The landing is typically a smooth and gentle process, usually involving jogging a few steps on a designated grassy field.
Is It Safe?
The thought of running off a mountain can be intimidating, but tandem paragliding has a strong safety record. France's national free-flight federation, the FFVL, enforces rigorous standards for equipment and pilot certification. Tandem pilots are highly experienced professionals trained to manage weather conditions and ensure passenger safety. In fact, the vast majority of paragliding incidents involve solo pilots, not tandem passengers. Flights will always be cancelled if weather conditions like strong winds or rain are not suitable. Many people with a fear of heights find the experience more comfortable than expected because you are securely seated, rather than standing on an exposed edge.
