The festival of lights brings immense joy, family gatherings, and a chance to dress up. Amidst the preparations and celebrations, however, it's easy to let your skincare routine slide. Here's a closer look at why sunscreen isn't just for summer.
The Unseen Threat: Sun and Smoke
Diwali
often involves spending time outdoors during the day, visiting friends and family or shopping. Many believe the autumn sun or hazy skies mean UV radiation isn't a concern, but that's a myth. Harmful UVA and UVB rays penetrate clouds and haze, contributing to premature ageing and pigmentation. But it's not just the sun. The festive air is thick with pollutants and smoke from firecrackers, which can wreak havoc on your skin. These fine particles, known as PM2.5, settle on the skin, clog pores, and generate free radicals—unstable molecules that damage collagen, leading to dullness, irritation, and dryness.
Choosing Your Festive Shield
Selecting the right sunscreen is key for comfortable, effective protection. For Indian weather and festivities, dermatologists recommend a 'broad-spectrum' sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and preferably 50. The SPF number indicates protection from UVB rays (which cause sunburn), while a PA rating (look for PA+++ or higher) signifies protection from deeper-penetrating UVA rays that cause ageing and tanning. Your skin type matters, too. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, opt for a non-comedogenic gel or fluid-based formula that provides a matte finish. For those with dry skin, a cream or lotion-based sunscreen with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid can prevent that tight, flaky feeling. Given the long hours and potential for sweating while celebrating, a water-resistant or sweat-resistant formula is an excellent choice.
Application and Reapplication Over Makeup
To get the full benefit, sunscreen should be the last step of your skincare routine, applied after your moisturiser and about 15-20 minutes before makeup. This allows it to form a protective film on the skin. But what about reapplying every few hours, as recommended? The thought of smearing lotion over a perfectly applied festive makeup look is a nightmare. Thankfully, there are modern solutions. Sunscreen mists and sprays are a popular choice; simply spritz over your face and let it dry. Another great option is a powder sunscreen, which can be lightly dusted over your makeup, simultaneously touching up your sun protection and reducing shine. You can also use a beauty sponge to gently press or 'stipple' a small amount of your regular liquid sunscreen over your makeup, a technique that minimizes smudging.
A Barrier Against More Than Just the Sun
A good sunscreen does more than just block UV rays; it acts as a physical barrier between your skin and the environment. This is especially important during Diwali when air quality often plummets. The layer of sunscreen can help prevent some of the soot and particulate matter from firecracker smoke from settling directly into your pores. When combined with an antioxidant serum containing Vitamin C or Niacinamide, applied before your sunscreen, you give your skin a powerful defence against the oxidative stress caused by pollution. Think of antioxidants as the backup army that neutralizes any free radicals that manage to get past your sunscreen shield.
The Post-Celebration Cleanse
At the end of a long day of festivities, a thorough cleanse is nonstoppable. This step is crucial to remove the layers of sunscreen, heavy makeup, sweat, and pollutants that have accumulated. Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to break down and dissolve everything. Follow up with a gentle, hydrating face wash to clean the skin without stripping it of its natural oils. This 'double cleansing' method ensures your skin is truly clean and can breathe. Follow with a soothing moisturiser to rehydrate your skin and repair its barrier, ensuring you wake up fresh and glowing for the next day of celebrations.
