From 'Read' to 'Play'
Reddit has begun a limited test that introduces a new way to consume its content. On selected English-language posts, users will see a toggle with two options: “Read” and “Play”. The “Read” view is the classic Reddit experience millions are familiar with.
Toggling to “Play,” however, launches a vertical, TikTok-style video. In this mode, AI-generated voices read the original post and a selection of its comments aloud. As the narration plays, the corresponding text is highlighted on screen, similar to karaoke. Each of these clips is clearly marked with the label, “Real conversation voiced by AI,” to ensure transparency. This test started rolling out on web browsers on August 17, 2026, with iOS and Android apps following the next day.
Bringing Reddit Stories Home
For years, a popular content format has thrived on other platforms like TikTok and YouTube: videos that feature an AI voice reading interesting Reddit threads, often against a backdrop of unrelated video game footage. These channels garner millions of views, creating a massive cottage industry that monetizes Reddit’s content, with none of the benefits flowing back to the platform itself. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged this trend during the company's Q2 earnings call in July, noting that a “spoken Reddit can be really engaging.” This new feature is Reddit’s direct attempt to reclaim that audience and engagement by creating a similar, native experience within its own ecosystem. The goal is to capture the attention of users who might prefer to listen to content while exercising, commuting, or doing chores.
How the AI Works (For Now)
The technology behind the feature uses several AI components. According to a Reddit spokesperson, the experiment leverages multi-voice text-to-speech, subtitles, and visual templates to bring conversations to life. It employs different-sounding AI voices for the original poster and the commenters to help distinguish between speakers. The visuals are not AI-generated imagery; instead, the video consists of screenshots of the Reddit posts themselves, which function as on-screen subtitles. In this initial phase, the posts are being manually selected by Reddit, and the test appears to be focused on text-only threads. The platform has even transformed posts that are years old, including one from an eight-year-old thread in the r/boardgames subreddit.
A Broader Push into Video and AI
This text-to-video experiment is part of a larger strategic shift for the company. Reddit has been steadily increasing its focus on video and AI to modernize the platform and create new revenue opportunities following its IPO. In June, the company introduced video comments, which reportedly now account for over 10% of all video posts. Reddit has also been expanding its AI-powered moderation tools to help keep communities safe. This latest test combines both initiatives, using AI to generate a new type of video content. By repurposing its vast archive of text-based discussions, Reddit can compete for user attention with short-form video giants without needing to commission entirely new content. The company has framed the test as an exploration of accessibility and immersion, seeking to understand if these new formats are useful and can be scaled authentically.
What Happens Next?
The future of this feature depends entirely on the results of this limited test. Reddit has not yet announced a timeline for a wider rollout, nor has it clarified key details, such as how comments will be selected for inclusion in the videos or whether users will be able to opt out of having their posts narrated by an AI. The AI narration also has its limitations, as it can sometimes mispronounce usernames or community-specific jargon. The primary challenge for Reddit will be to integrate these new formats without alienating its core user base, which has long valued the platform's text-centric nature. The company will be monitoring user feedback closely to determine whether AI-voiced videos can feel like an authentic extension of the Reddit experience or if they will be seen as a low-quality gimmick.
