A Bold Statement in Design
Bentley's bespoke customization arm, Mulliner, has introduced a new 'Design Theme' for the ultra-exclusive Supersports model, which is limited to just 500 examples. The new options are curated into three distinct specifications: 'Electric', 'Dragon',
and 'Brodgar'. The 'Electric' theme pairs an Electric Blue exterior that fades into Dark Sapphire with a vibrant Klein Blue and Imperial Blue interior. The 'Dragon' theme is even more dramatic, combining a Dragon Red and Black Crystal exterior with a Hotspur and Beluga cabin. These themes represent a significant move by the luxury automaker to offer more expressive and personalized options directly from the factory, a space often dominated by aftermarket customizers.
More Than Just New Colors
This isn't just about adding new swatches to a catalog. The Mulliner Design Theme for the Supersports is a holistic concept that extends from the exterior to the interior with a unique, driver-focused approach. The cabin features an asymmetric, two-tone layout where the brighter, more vibrant color is used on the driver's side, while the passenger side features a more subdued darker tone. This design choice intentionally emphasizes the driver-focused nature of the Supersports, a two-seat grand tourer engineered for performance. The theme is consistent regardless of whether the car is left- or right-hand drive, always centering the visual drama around the person behind the wheel.
The Psychology of Performance
The choice of 'Electric Blue' and 'Dragon Red' is anything but arbitrary. Color psychology plays a significant role in automotive design, influencing a driver's mood and perception. Red is universally associated with passion, energy, and performance, making it a natural fit for a high-powered machine like the Supersports. It can increase alertness and create a sense of excitement. Blue, particularly electric or vibrant shades, suggests technology, innovation, and calm confidence. By offering these specific, evocative hues, Bentley is allowing customers to align the car's personality with their own, whether they want to project an image of confident performance or cool, cutting-edge style.
A Trend Towards Personalization
Bentley's move reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry, where interior design and personalization are becoming key differentiators. For years, luxury was defined by quiet conservatism, but modern buyers, especially at the high end of the market, increasingly want their vehicles to be unique expressions of their identity. Automakers are responding with more adventurous color palettes, sustainable and tactile materials like Alcantara and carbon fiber (both used in the Supersports), and user-centric features. The focus is shifting from simple luxury to experiential luxury, where the story and feel of the materials and colors are as important as the vehicle's performance statistics.
Debut and Availability
This bold new look for the Bentley Supersports is set to make its public debut at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Design Theme by Mulliner is available exclusively for the Supersports, a model that is already the most driver-focused and lightweight version of the Continental GT. While the three curated themes offer a starting point, Bentley has indicated that customers can work with Mulliner for even more bespoke combinations. This level of customization reinforces the Supersports' position at the pinnacle of Bentley's performance lineup, offering not just raw power but also unparalleled opportunities for individual expression.
