Diwali brings joy, light, and festivities, but it can also bring stress to our skin. Between pollution, late nights, and rich food, our skin often needs extra care. Here’s how to soothe irritation and maintain your glow.
Why Your Skin Protests During Diwali
The festive season can be tough
on your skin for several reasons. Increased air pollution from firecrackers and traffic releases particles that can clog pores and cause inflammation. Late nights disrupt your skin's natural repair cycle, leading to dullness. Furthermore, the delicious but often rich, sugary, and oily foods consumed during Diwali can trigger breakouts by increasing oil production in your skin. This combination of factors can leave your skin feeling irritated, dry, red, and prone to acne.
The Golden Rule: Cleanse Gently, But Thoroughly
The first step to calm skin is effective cleansing. Heavy makeup, sweat, and pollutants need to be removed, but without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Consider a double cleanse in the evening. Start with a cleansing oil or balm to dissolve makeup and sunscreen, then follow up with a gentle, sulphate-free face wash. This ensures your face is truly clean without causing further irritation. When you come indoors after being exposed to smoke, wash your face with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser to remove residue.
Soothe and Hydrate with Calming Ingredients
After cleansing, focus on soothing and hydrating your irritated skin. Look for products containing ingredients known for their calming properties. Niacinamide (a form of Vitamin B3) is excellent for reducing redness and strengthening the skin's barrier. Hyaluronic acid is a hydration powerhouse that plumps the skin by drawing in moisture. Other beneficial ingredients include Centella Asiatica (Cica), aloe vera, and chamomile, all of which help to reduce inflammation and soothe sensitivity. A simple, lightweight serum or toner with these ingredients can make a significant difference.
Prioritise Barrier Repair
Your skin barrier is its first line of defence. When it’s compromised, it can lead to sensitivity and moisture loss. The pollution and dry air common during Diwali can weaken this barrier. To repair and strengthen it, use a good moisturiser twice a day. Look for creams that contain ceramides, which are lipids that naturally occur in skin and are essential for a healthy barrier. A well-moisturised barrier is better equipped to keep irritants out and hydration in, which is key to preventing festive flare-ups.
Pause Strong Actives, Protect from the Sun
When your skin is already irritated, it’s wise to take a break from potent active ingredients like strong exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) and retinoids. Harsh exfoliation can worsen sensitivity and redness. Instead, focus on a gentle, healing routine. Also, don't forget sunscreen. Even if the sky looks hazy from smog, harmful UV rays can still damage your skin. Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every morning as the final step in your routine to protect your skin from sun damage, which can exacerbate irritation.
