A New Chapter in Overnight Travel
Indian Railways is preparing to launch a much-anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper Express connecting New Delhi and Varanasi. While two Vande Bharat chair-car services already operate on this route during the day, this will be the first sleeper version, specifically
designed for comfortable overnight journeys. This move addresses a long-standing need for a premium, high-speed overnight service, allowing passengers to travel through the night and save a valuable day for work or sightseeing. The introduction of this train is expected to be a game-changer, offering a modern alternative to popular existing overnight trains and potentially easing the heavy demand on those services.
Comfort, Class, and Capacity
The proposed Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed with passenger comfort as a priority. According to reports, the train will consist of 16 coaches with a total capacity for approximately 823 passengers. The configuration is expected to cater to different budgets and preferences, featuring one First AC coach, four AC 2-tier coaches, and eleven AC 3-tier coaches. These fully air-conditioned coaches are being developed with modern interiors and ergonomically designed berths, including improved ladders for accessing upper berths, aiming to provide a superior overnight travel experience compared to conventional sleeper trains.
The Proposed Overnight Schedule
The key appeal of this new service is its convenient timing. While the final schedule is yet to be officially released by the Railway Board, initial reports suggest a highly practical overnight itinerary. The proposed plan indicates the train would depart from both New Delhi and Varanasi Cantt at around 9:20 PM, arriving at its destination at approximately 5:00 AM the next morning. This sub-eight-hour journey is a significant improvement. The train is expected to have limited stops, with key halts planned at Prayagraj and Kanpur Central, serving major passenger hubs in Uttar Pradesh along the way.
Speed and Efficiency on a Busy Route
The Vande Bharat platform is synonymous with speed, and the sleeper version is no exception. The train is expected to operate at speeds between 130 kmph and 160 kmph, depending on track conditions and final clearances from railway authorities. This operational speed will be crucial in maintaining the tight overnight schedule. The Delhi-Varanasi corridor is one of the busiest in the country, and the introduction of a high-speed sleeper will not only reduce travel time but also add much-needed capacity. The existing Vande Bharat trains on this route have already proven immensely popular, carrying millions of passengers and indicating strong demand for premium services.
Booking and Launch Expectations
While there has been considerable buzz, an official launch date for the Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat Sleeper has not yet been announced by Indian Railways. Reports suggest that trial runs are expected to commence soon, with a potential commercial launch planned around the festive season of Diwali in November 2026. Fares have not been finalized either, but they are expected to be structured similarly to other Vande Bharat services, with dynamic pricing. Travelers eager to experience this new service should keep a close watch on official announcements from Indian Railways and the IRCTC portal for booking information. It is important to rely only on these official channels for booking tickets once they become available.
