Thai authorities have stated this move is aimed at standardizing immigration rules and preventing misuse of the long-stay system.
The Crucial Cut-Off: September 15
The date of your entry into Thailand is the single most important factor in determining your permitted stay. The new 30-day rule officially comes into effect on September 15, 2026. This means that the rules applied by immigration officers will change overnight. This policy revision was officially published in Thailand's Royal Gazette on August 31, with a 15-day grace period before implementation. Therefore, any traveller whose flight lands before midnight on September 14 will be processed under the old system, while those landing from 00:00 on September 15 will be subject to the new rules.
For Travellers Entering Before September 15
If you are an Indian tourist arriving in Thailand on or before September 14, 2026, you will be granted the existing 60-day visa-free stay. Thai authorities have confirmed that the new rules are not retroactive. Your permitted stay, as stamped in your passport upon entry, will be honored for its full duration, even though the policy changes while you are in the country. For example, if you enter on September 10 and receive a 60-day stamp, you are permitted to stay for that full period. There is no need to worry that your stay will be cut short. This provides a clear advantage for those who can plan their travel to arrive just before the deadline.
For Travellers Arriving On or After September 15
Indian passport holders who arrive in Thailand from September 15 onwards will be granted a 30-day visa-free stay for tourism. For the vast majority of Indian tourists, this change will have little practical impact, as official data shows the average stay is around one week. The 30-day window is more than sufficient for typical holiday itineraries covering popular destinations like Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, or Chiang Mai. However, this change is significant for long-term travellers, backpackers, or digital nomads who had previously relied on the 60-day period for extended stays.
Need to Stay Longer? Check Your Options
What if your travel plans require more than 30 days? For those entering under the new rules, it may still be possible to request an extension of stay for another 30 days. However, this is not guaranteed and is granted at the discretion of Thai immigration officers upon application from within the country. The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi advises that any Indian citizen who knows in advance that they wish to stay for more than 30 days should apply for an appropriate e-Visa before their journey. This is the most secure way to ensure your longer-term travel plans are not disrupted. Relying on an in-country extension carries the risk of denial, so planning ahead is key.
