El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern characterized by the unusual warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. This year, however, is different. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has confirmed
that El Niño conditions are not only present but are strengthening rapidly. Forecast models show a remarkable agreement, predicting that ocean temperatures in key monitoring regions could exceed long-term averages by more than 2°C. Some climate scientists are even forecasting an event that could surpass the strongest El Niños on record by a significant margin. This is happening on top of an ocean that has already absorbed over 90% of the excess heat from human-caused global warming, making the situation particularly potent.
What Is the 1.5°C Threshold?
The "climate threshold" in question is the 1.5°C warming limit set by the 2015 Paris Agreement. This goal refers to limiting the increase in the global average temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels (typically the period from 1850-1900). It's not an arbitrary number. Scientific bodies like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have shown that warming beyond this point dramatically increases the risks of severe and potentially irreversible impacts, such as more extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and the collapse of ecosystems. Every fraction of a degree matters, and keeping warming as close to 1.5°C as possible is considered crucial for maintaining a liveable planet.
A Temporary but Telling Breach
El Niño acts like a massive heat release, transferring warmth from the Pacific Ocean into the atmosphere. This causes a temporary but significant spike in global average temperatures. When this natural spike is added to the steady underlying trend of human-caused warming, it creates a high probability of temporarily overshooting the 1.5°C mark. Scientists are clear that a single year or month exceeding 1.5°C does not mean the Paris Agreement goal has permanently failed, as that target refers to long-term warming over decades. However, the WMO has been warning that we will breach this level on a temporary basis with increasing frequency. Forecasts suggest a strong chance that 2026 or 2027 could become the new warmest year on record, potentially exceeding 1.5°C of warming for the annual average.
What This Means for India
For India, a strong El Niño has direct and worrying consequences. The phenomenon is historically linked to a weakening of the southwest monsoon, which is the lifeline for the country's agriculture. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already forecast a below-normal monsoon for 2026. This can lead to deficient rainfall, delayed sowing of crucial kharif crops like rice and pulses, and reduced yields, which in turn fuels food inflation. The impact extends beyond farms. Lower rainfall depletes water levels in reservoirs, affecting drinking water supplies and reducing hydroelectric power generation. At the same time, El Niño years are often associated with hotter temperatures and more intense heatwaves, driving up electricity demand for cooling and putting immense strain on the power grid.
A Warning Shot for the Planet
Think of this record El Niño as a stress test for our planet. A temporary breach of the 1.5°C threshold offers a real-world preview of what a permanently warmer world would feel like. It's a glimpse into a future with more frequent extreme weather, greater food and water insecurity, and immense stress on our infrastructure. While some effects of a temporary overshoot might be reversible, others, like the extinction of species or the melting of ice sheets, are not. Even if global temperatures were to come back down, the world would be fundamentally more damaged than if the threshold had never been crossed. This event underscores the urgency of global action. It is a clear signal that the window to avoid the most severe consequences of climate change is closing rapidly.
