A Groundbreaking Debut
The Goodwood Festival of Speed is renowned for showcasing the pinnacle of automotive engineering and design, and 2026 is no exception. Amidst the symphony of roaring engines, Bentley's bespoke Mulliner division unveiled a new styling package for the Continental
GT Supersports that has the car world talking. The centrepiece is a visually stunning and technically complex asymmetric paint fade that transitions across the entire width of the car. It represents a bold new direction for a brand traditionally associated with stately elegance, proving that heritage and innovation can coexist beautifully.
The Art of Asymmetry
So, what exactly is an asymmetric paint fade? Unlike typical paint jobs that are uniform, or even fades that run from front to back, this new Mulliner Design Theme features a colour gradient that flows from one side of the vehicle to the other. The concept is intentionally driver-focused. A brighter, more vibrant accent colour marks the driver's side, gradually and seamlessly blending into a darker, more subdued tone on the passenger side. This effect is complemented by an off-centre racing stripe, aligning with the passenger seat rather than the car's centreline, further enhancing the asymmetric and driver-centric feel. The company has introduced several curated themes, such as an “Electric” theme where Electric Blue fades into Dark Sapphire, and a “Dragon” theme with a striking red transition.
Mulliner: The Home of Bespoke
This innovation comes from Mulliner, Bentley's in-house coachbuilding and bespoke division, which has a history stretching back centuries. Mulliner is where Bentley's most discerning clients go to make their vehicles truly one-of-a-kind. From unique colour matching and rare interior veneers to entirely new body styles like the limited-run Batur and Bacalar models, Mulliner turns client visions into reality. This new asymmetric paint is not just a new option; it is a statement of Mulliner's capabilities, showing that it can rival and even surpass the wild customizations offered by third-party tuners, bringing that level of personalisation in-house with factory quality. Each project is a collaboration between the customer and Mulliner's design team, ensuring the final car is a personal masterpiece.
More Than Just Paint
The new Supersports Design Theme is about more than just the exterior fade. The package includes a host of other bespoke details that create a cohesive and exclusive feel. A number ‘8’ graphic on the front grille adds a touch of racing heritage. Carbon fibre details, such as diffusers and fender blades, are accented with fine pinstripes that echo the main colours. Inside, the driver-centric theme continues with a split two-tone colour scheme that separates the driver's cockpit from the passenger space. Three-tone interiors and special dynamic seat finishes were features explored in earlier Supersports themes, and this new package builds on that legacy of detailed interior craftsmanship. These elements combine to create a car that feels special from every angle, inside and out.
The Future of Luxury Customization
Bentley's introduction of the asymmetric fade is a significant development in the world of ultra-luxury automobiles. It signals a trend toward even more radical and personal forms of customization. As the super-rich seek ever-greater levels of exclusivity, car manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Mulliner has even announced an annual 'Bespoke Series', much like a fashion house's seasonal collection, to showcase new ideas in craftsmanship and personalization. This Goodwood debut is a clear indication that for brands like Bentley, the future is not just about performance and luxury, but about offering a level of artistic expression and individuality that is, quite literally, tailored to the driver.
