A Green Signal from the Regulator
On July 17, 2026, India's space regulator, IN-SPACe, gave a significant nod to a homegrown satellite internet proposal. It declared Reliance Jio's ambitious plan to deploy a constellation of approximately 1,600 LEO satellites as "technically sound." This
evaluation, conducted with ISRO and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is a crucial step that paves the way for India to establish its first-ever local LEO constellation, a key move for strategic autonomy and national security. While this is a technical approval and not the final commercial license, it allows the government to support Jio in securing the necessary international orbital slots to make the network a reality.
What Exactly Are LEO Satellites?
Imagine the internet, but beamed down from space. That's the basic premise of LEO satellite broadband. Unlike traditional geostationary satellites that orbit far from Earth (around 36,000 km), LEO satellites operate in a much lower orbit, typically between 400 to 2,000 km. This proximity makes a huge difference. The shorter distance means data travels much faster, resulting in significantly lower latency, or lag. This makes LEO internet suitable for modern applications like video calls, online gaming, and streaming, which are often frustrating on older satellite technology. It offers fibre-like speeds without the need to lay physical cables across difficult terrain.
The Race to Connect India
The Indian satellite broadband market is becoming a competitive arena. Globally recognised players like Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon's Project Kuiper have been actively seeking to enter the Indian market. Starlink has reportedly received key licenses but is navigating India's strict security requirements, which have become a major focus for regulators. Another major operator, Eutelsat OneWeb, backed by India's own Bharti Group, has also secured licenses and is poised to launch services through a partnership with Tata's Nelco. However, the latest approval puts a spotlight on Reliance Jio's homegrown ambitions. Jio's proposed constellation boasts a planned capacity of up to 5 terabits per second (Tbps), substantially more than what has been approved for competitors so far, signalling a serious intent to lead the market.
The Promise: Bridging the Digital Divide
The most significant impact of LEO satellite technology will be felt far from the city centres. While urban India enjoys robust fibre and 5G connectivity, vast rural and remote areas remain underserved. LEO broadband holds the potential to bridge this gap, offering a lifeline of high-speed internet to communities in hilly terrains, remote villages, islands, and border regions where laying fibre is economically and logistically unfeasible. This could revolutionize education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for millions who are currently on the wrong side of the digital divide. For businesses, it provides a reliable connection for logistics, maritime operations, and disaster management.
Hurdles in This Space-Age Dream
Despite the immense potential, the path to universal satellite internet is not without challenges. The primary obstacle for consumers is cost. The user terminals—the small dish antennas required to receive the signal—and the monthly subscription fees are currently much higher than those for mobile or fibre broadband. Furthermore, all operators face a complex regulatory environment. India mandates strict security protocols, including the requirement for all Indian user data to be routed and stored within the country, which requires foreign operators to create bespoke systems for India. While the government has recently eased some local sourcing rules, the final spectrum allocation and pricing are still awaited, which is the final gate all operators must pass before a commercial launch.
