What Is Changing at DXB?
Dubai International Airport (DXB) is in the process of rolling out a new generation of advanced security scanners across its terminals. According to Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths, the airport is investing in new machines that will make the security process “slicker,
quicker, faster, and more convenient.” The goal is to gradually replace the older X-ray equipment with state-of-the-art systems that reduce the need for passengers to unpack their carry-on luggage at the checkpoint, a process that has long been a point of stress and delay for travellers. This ongoing programme of continuous upgrades aims to streamline the passenger journey and improve operational efficiency.
The Technology Behind the Change
The new machines are Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, similar to the technology used for medical imaging. Unlike traditional 2D X-ray scanners that can be obscured by dense items, CT scanners create a detailed 3D image of a bag’s contents. The system works by taking hundreds of images from various angles as the bag passes through, which are then assembled into a three-dimensional model that can be rotated and inspected by security officers on a screen. This advanced imaging allows security personnel and sophisticated algorithms to digitally inspect the contents of a bag with much greater accuracy, identifying items without them needing to be physically removed.
What This Means for Your Journey
For passengers, the most significant benefit is convenience. Once the new scanners are fully implemented, you will likely no longer need to remove large electronics like laptops and tablets from your hand luggage. The same applies to liquids, which can remain inside your bag during the screening process. This change is expected to significantly speed up security queues, reduce the hassle of unpacking and repacking, and minimise the chances of accidentally leaving personal items behind in the trays. As CEO Paul Griffiths noted, the intrusive days of removing belts, shoes, and other items could become “a thing of the past.”
When and Where to Expect This
The rollout of these CT scanners is a gradual process. Dubai Airports has confirmed that the new machines are already being installed across all three terminals at DXB, but it will take time to replace all the older equipment. This means travellers might encounter a mix of old and new procedures for the time being. It's crucial for passengers to pay attention and follow the specific instructions given by security staff at the checkpoint. If you are directed to remove your laptop or liquids, you should still do so. The ultimate goal is for every passenger to eventually experience the same streamlined process.
A Word on Existing Rules
While the screening process is becoming easier, the fundamental rules on what you can carry have not changed. The restriction on liquids, aerosols, and gels remains in effect: containers must not exceed 100ml. While you may not need to take the 100ml containers out of your bag for screening, you cannot bring larger bottles in your hand luggage. The new technology is designed to screen permitted items more efficiently, not to change what is allowed on board an aircraft. Always double-check current regulations before heading to the airport to avoid any last-minute issues.
