The Great Indian Ticketing Struggle
For decades, booking a train ticket in India, especially for last-minute 'Tatkal' quotas or during peak holiday seasons, has been a high-stress activity. Passengers have long complained about the IRCTC website slowing down, payment gateways failing, and
tickets for popular routes vanishing within seconds of the booking window opening. This digital rush hour created an environment where automated bots and unauthorised agents often had an unfair advantage, snapping up tickets before genuine passengers could even enter their details. With nearly 89% of reserved tickets now booked online, the pressure on the decades-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) has become immense, leading to a frustrating experience for millions.
A Major System Overhaul
Recognising these challenges, Indian Railways has initiated one of the most significant technological upgrades in its history, beginning in August 2026. The core of this change is the replacement of the 40-year-old PRS, which was first introduced in 1986. The new cloud-based system is engineered to handle a much larger volume of traffic. The goal is to increase the booking capacity from around 32,000-37,000 tickets per minute to over 1.5 lakh tickets per minute. This five-fold increase in capacity is designed to prevent the system from crashing during peak demand and ensure a smoother, faster booking process for everyone.
Fighting Bots with Artificial Intelligence
Alongside the infrastructure upgrade, a key development is the deployment of an AI-powered fraud detection system. This smart system works in the background to monitor booking patterns in real-time. It is designed to identify and block suspicious activities that suggest bot usage, such as extremely fast typing, abnormally quick payment processing, or multiple bookings from a single IP address during Tatkal hours. By flagging and blocking these automated attempts, the AI aims to level the playing field, giving human users a fairer chance at securing tickets. Early data from a revamped beta website launched in July 2026 already shows a 5% increase in successful bookings within the first three minutes of the Tatkal window opening.
A Cleaner, Smarter Booking Experience
The changes aren't just happening behind the scenes. IRCTC rolled out a beta version of its redesigned website in July 2026, focusing on a cleaner, more user-friendly interface. Based on user feedback, the new design reduces distractions like unnecessary CAPTCHA prompts, pop-ups, and flashing graphics that often interrupted the booking flow. A significant improvement is the ability to see seat availability across all classes (Sleeper, 3A, 2A, etc.) on a single screen, eliminating the need to search each class separately. The checkout process has also been streamlined, and users can now save passenger details in a 'Master List' to avoid manually typing them every time.
Smarter Predictions for Waitlisted Tickets
Another passenger-friendly feature being enhanced is an AI-powered tool for predicting the confirmation chances of waitlisted tickets. This system analyses historical booking data, travel trends, and even festival calendars to estimate the probability of a waitlisted ticket getting confirmed. According to railway officials, the accuracy of this prediction model has improved significantly, from around 53% to 94%. This provides passengers with a much clearer picture of their travel chances, helping them make more informed decisions about whether to book a waitlisted ticket or look for alternatives.
