For example, at a high UV Index, someone with very fair skin might start to burn in under 15 minutes, while someone with olive skin might have closer to an hour. It's also important to know that after a certain point, more sun doesn't equal more vitamin D; the body has a built-in mechanism that stops production to prevent toxicity.
Climate and Location Realities
Where you live in the world drastically changes the sun exposure equation. Factors like latitude, altitude, cloud cover, and even reflective surfaces like water or snow alter UV intensity. In places closer to the equator, like much of India, the UV Index is consistently high throughout the year, meaning the risk of sun damage is greater and the time needed for vitamin D synthesis is shorter. Conversely, in northern latitudes, winter sun may be too weak to produce any vitamin D at all, requiring much longer exposure times or supplementation. A simple way to gauge UV strength is the shadow rule: if your shadow is shorter than you are, UV exposure is high.

For those who spend their days in an office, getting adequate daylight can feel like a challenge. The key is to be intentional. A brisk 15-minute walk during your lunch break can make a huge difference. If possible, take phone calls while walking outside or eat your lunch near a window or on a patio. Even small doses of natural light add up. Taking a short break to step outside in the morning can be particularly beneficial for setting your circadian rhythm and boosting alertness for the day ahead. Positioning your desk near a window, if you have the option, also provides consistent, albeit filtered, light exposure throughout the workday.
