What Are Connected-Vehicle Standards?
At their core, connected-vehicle standards are a set of rules and technical specifications that allow cars to communicate wirelessly with the world around them. This ecosystem is broadly known as V2X, which stands for "Vehicle-to-Everything". Think of it as creating
a social network for vehicles, where they can share real-time information to prevent accidents, improve traffic flow, and make driving smarter and safer. In India, these regulations are taking shape through Automotive Industry Standards (AIS). While rules like AIS-140 have already mandated GPS tracking and panic buttons for commercial and public transport vehicles for years, a new proposal is set to make Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication mandatory.
How Does This 'Talking Car' Technology Work?
The technology allows vehicles to constantly broadcast and receive messages containing data like their speed, position, direction, and braking status. This creates a 360-degree awareness of other connected vehicles nearby, even those hidden around a blind corner or blocked by a large truck. The Indian government has proposed making this technology, governed by a new standard called AIS-230, mandatory for all new two-wheelers, passenger cars, and commercial vehicles starting from October 1, 2028. This system will use a specific radio frequency band to ensure reliable, low-latency communication that doesn't depend on the public internet or mobile networks.
The Practical Safety Benefits for You
This is where the plan moves from technical jargon to real-world impact. The primary goal is a dramatic reduction in road accidents. A V2X-enabled car can provide forward-collision warnings if a vehicle several cars ahead brakes suddenly. It can alert you to an unsafe lane change, the presence of a nearby emergency vehicle, or a car running a red light at an upcoming intersection. Unlike current safety systems like cameras and radar, which can only react to what they 'see', V2V communication works beyond the driver's line of sight, offering a new layer of proactive safety. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has estimated that V2V technology alone could reduce certain types of crashes significantly.
Beyond Collision Warnings: A Smarter Commute
While safety is the main driver, the benefits don't stop there. Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication will allow cars to 'talk' to traffic lights, which can help optimise signal timing to reduce congestion and unnecessary idling. This leads to smoother traffic flow and improved fuel efficiency. Your car could get real-time updates on road closures, work zones, or available parking spots, rerouting you to save time. In essence, connected standards will transform vehicles from isolated machines into active participants in a smarter, more efficient transportation network.
Challenges on the Road Ahead
Implementing such a large-scale system is not without its hurdles. One of the biggest challenges is the transition period. The benefits of V2X grow as more vehicles on the road are equipped with the technology. For many years, new connected cars will share the road with millions of older, non-connected vehicles, pedestrians, and animals, meaning traditional sensors will remain crucial. Other significant concerns include the high cost of the technology, ensuring the vast amounts of data generated remain private and secure from cyberattacks, and building the necessary roadside infrastructure to support V2I communication.
