A Landmark Healthcare Investment
The Adani Group has officially commenced work on its massive healthcare project in New Town, Kolkata, with a foundation stone-laying ceremony on September 24, 2026. The project, named Adani Arogya Mandir, is set on a 51.75-acre plot in the Bengal Silicon
Valley Tech Hub. It involves an investment of over Rs 4,000 crore to build a 2,000-bed medical institution. This move signifies the conglomerate's major entry into the healthcare sector in Eastern India, a region that has historically seen an outflow of patients seeking specialized medical treatment elsewhere. The scale of the project is substantial, aiming to serve over 200,000 inpatients and more than two million outpatients annually once fully operational.
More Than Just a Hospital
This project is envisioned as a comprehensive health city, not merely a standalone hospital. At the heart of the institution will be a medical college with an annual intake of 150 undergraduate students, alongside a nursing college and paramedical training facilities. The goal is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that not only treats patients but also develops a skilled healthcare workforce for the state. The plan also includes a research centre focusing on genomics, AI in medicine, and clinical trials. To support patients' families, the campus will feature accommodation facilities like a Meditel and a Vishram Gruh. The first phase of development will concentrate on advanced cancer care, addressing a critical need for specialized services in the region.
A 'Not-For-Profit' Model
A key feature of the Adani Arogya Mandir is its hybrid operational model. Of the 2,000 beds, a full 1,000 will be reserved for the economically weaker sections of society, who will be eligible for treatment under state and central health insurance schemes. The remaining 1,000 beds will operate on a commercial basis, with the revenue generated intended to cross-subsidize the free services and ensure the institution's long-term sustainability. This dual structure aims to balance social impact with the financial requirements of running a state-of-the-art medical facility. Gautam Adani described the facility as a "world-class, not-for-profit medical institution" dedicated to serving the people of Bengal.
Adani's Strategic Healthcare Push
The Kolkata hospital is a cornerstone of the Adani Group's broader diversification into social infrastructure, including healthcare and education. This move follows earlier announcements of a Rs 60,000 crore investment plan to build a network of hospitals across India, sometimes in collaboration with international experts like the Mayo Clinic. By entering the healthcare space at this scale, the conglomerate, primarily known for ports, energy, and infrastructure, is positioning itself as a major player in a sector critical to national development. The project is expected to generate over 10,000 jobs in West Bengal's healthcare ecosystem, from medical professionals to support staff. This investment is part of a larger commitment by the Adani Group to invest over Rs 1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035 across various sectors.
