Khinalig to Galakhudat: A Walk Through Time
Perched at over 2,200 metres, Khinalig is one of the highest and oldest continuously inhabited villages in the Caucasus. This trail offers a magnificent introduction to the scale of the Greater Caucasus. The route to the neighbouring village of Galakhudat
is a moderate, well-marked path that traverses high-altitude plateaus with dramatic views of Mount Gizilgaya. Spanning approximately 8 kilometres, it's an achievable day hike that immerses you in a living cultural landscape, where the local language and traditions have been preserved for millennia. The journey isn't just about the panoramic scenery; it's a step back into a world of ancient stone houses and timeless shepherd routes.
Laza to Kuzun: Waterfalls and Valley Views
The hike between the mountain villages of Laza and Kuzun in the Gusar district is a feast for the senses. This trail is famous for its stunning twin waterfalls that cascade into the Gusarchay river gorge, offering one of the region's most photogenic scenes. The path winds through lush green valleys and meadows, with the jagged peaks of Mount Shahdag and Gizilgaya providing a constant, awe-inspiring backdrop. The trek involves both descents and ascents as you cross the valley, making for a moderately challenging day. It combines natural wonder with cultural encounters, as both villages are home to the Lezgian community, known for their warm hospitality.
Sim Village: The Hyrcanian Rainforest Trek
In the south of Azerbaijan, the Talysh Mountains offer a completely different hiking experience. Here, you'll find the Hirkan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site protecting ancient Hyrcanian forests. A hike to the remote village of Sim takes you deep into this unique, subtropical world. The forest is a dense, primeval landscape of moss-covered ironwood and Caucasian zelkova trees, creating an almost magical atmosphere. Trails can be steep and rewarding, leading from humid valleys to ridges with views over the Caspian plain. The village of Sim itself, built on a rock and famous for its beekeeping, feels like a hidden sanctuary.
Griz to Grizdahna Waterfall: Canyons and Cliffs
For a shorter but equally dramatic hike, the trail from the ancient village of Griz to the Grizdahna waterfall is an excellent choice. Griz is another of Azerbaijan's high-altitude settlements with its own unique language. The marked trail leads you along the edge of the breathtaking Gudyalchay canyon, with views of steep cliffs and soaring birds of prey. The path, known locally as 'Eh Road', is considered challenging and requires caution, especially on the steep descent toward the waterfall. The reward is the sight of the powerful waterfall and the rugged beauty of a less-travelled corner of the Guba region.
Sheki to Kish: A Journey of History and Nature
This route combines the charms of a historic Silk Road city with a rewarding walk through nature. While the most direct path from Sheki to the nearby village of Kish is a paved city walk, several unmarked trails offer a more immersive experience for the adventurous. A more demanding but marked route begins in the village of Bash Goynuk and ends in Kish. The main attraction in Kish is the ancient Church of Kish, a beautifully preserved Caucasian Albanian temple that speaks to the region's deep pre-Islamic history. The hike itself, whether a gentle stroll or a more strenuous forest trek, takes you through rolling hills and offers a peaceful transition from urban history to serene village life, connecting you to the layers of culture that define this part of Azerbaijan.
