What Was the 12-Week Study?
The conversation was recently stirred by a Canadian study from the University of Toronto, published in The Journal of Nutrition, which specifically investigated the effects of full-fat dairy. Researchers took a group of 74 adults with overweight or obesity
and, for 12 weeks, assigned them to different diets. One group consumed three daily servings of full-fat dairy products. The goal was to see what impact this would have on key health markers like body weight, body fat, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure, compared to groups consuming less dairy. This type of short-term, randomized trial is designed to get a clear picture of how a specific dietary change affects the body without the influence of other long-term lifestyle factors.
The Surprising Findings
The results caught the attention of many because they seemed to contradict long-standing advice. After 12 weeks, the participants who ate three servings of full-fat dairy each day showed no meaningful negative changes in their body weight, body composition, or cholesterol levels. In fact, they experienced some positive outcomes, including improvements in blood pressure and a higher intake of important nutrients like calcium, protein, and vitamin D. Essentially, adding full-fat dairy into their diet didn't seem to cause the harm that many guidelines, which have traditionally warned against the saturated fat in whole dairy, would predict. For many people, especially older adults who need nutrient-dense foods, full-fat dairy can be a practical way to get protein and calcium without adverse effects. The best approach is to consider your entire dietary pattern.
