Combining cardio and strength, a practice known as concurrent training, effectively improves both aerobic capacity and strength.
So, Does Workout Order Matter?
While the latest research suggests that cardio won't inherently 'kill your gains,' the order in which you perform your exercises can still make a difference depending on what you want to achieve. Most experts and studies agree on a simple principle: prioritize what's most important to you. If your primary goal is to increase your strength or build muscle mass, you should lift weights first. Research has shown that strength training before cardio allows you to lift heavier and with better form, which is critical for progressive overload and muscle development. Lifting in a fatigued state after a long run could compromise your form and increase injury risk. Conversely, if your main objective is to improve your cardiovascular endurance—for instance, if you're training for a 10K race—doing your cardio first is the recommended approach. However, a 'weights-first' approach may offer a slight advantage for fat loss by helping to preserve muscle mass, which in turn keeps your resting metabolism higher. Ultimately, the best routine is the one you can stick with. For those with limited time, combining both in a single session is highly effective.
