The festive season is here, and the pressure to look your radiant best for Diwali is real. In the quest for that perfect glow, it's tempting to throw every powerful skincare serum and treatment at your face. But this can seriously backfire.
What Are Skincare 'Actives'?
First, let's
define our terms. 'Actives' are the ingredients in your skincare products that are designed to target a specific concern. Think of them as the powerhouses of your routine. Common examples include retinoids (like retinol) for anti-ageing, Vitamin C for brightening, and exfoliating acids like AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid) and BHAs (salicylic acid) for improving texture and treating acne. When used correctly, these ingredients can deliver fantastic results. The problem starts when we get impatient and decide that if a little is good, a lot must be better.
The Glow-Up Mistake: More Is Not More
In the weeks leading up to Diwali, many of us ramp up our routines, hoping for a quick transformation. It’s easy to get carried away, layering multiple strong products or using them too frequently. You might use an acid toner in the morning, a high-strength Vitamin C serum, and then a retinol at night. Social media trends often encourage complex, multi-step routines that can encourage overuse. However, your skin has its limits. Instead of creating a healthy glow, this aggressive approach can overwhelm your skin, leading to a compromised skin barrier.
Signs You Are Overdoing It
How do you know if you've pushed your skin too far? The signs are often uncomfortable and the opposite of what you were hoping for. Look out for increased redness, irritation, and a persistent tight feeling. Your skin might start peeling, flaking, or feel rough to the touch. Ironically, over-exfoliating can even lead to more breakouts, as a damaged barrier allows bacteria to penetrate more easily. A classic sign is when your regular, gentle products—even your simple moisturiser—suddenly start to sting or burn upon application.
Damaging Your Skin's Protective Barrier
Think of your skin barrier as a protective brick wall. The skin cells are the bricks, and natural fats like ceramides are the mortar holding it all together. This barrier is crucial for keeping moisture in and irritants, pollution, and bacteria out. When you overuse actives, especially exfoliants like AHAs, BHAs, and retinol, you strip away this protective mortar. This weakens the wall, allowing water to escape (leading to dehydration) and irritants to get in, causing inflammation and sensitivity. Instead of glowing, your skin is now in a state of defence, busy trying to repair itself.
A Smarter Pre-Festive Skincare Plan
The secret to a real Diwali glow is to support your skin barrier, not attack it. Dermatologists recommend starting any new routine at least two to three weeks before the main event. This is not the time to experiment with a strong new peel or multiple new serums. Instead, focus on a simple, consistent routine: a gentle cleanser, a hydrating moisturiser, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every single morning. If you want to use an active, pick just one to use at night. For example, use a Vitamin C serum in the morning for antioxidant protection and a gentle retinol at night for cell turnover—but not on the same night as a strong exfoliating acid.
How to Use Actives Wisely
If you are new to actives, start slow. Introduce one new product at a time, using it only once or twice a week to see how your skin tolerates it before increasing the frequency. Applying actives to completely dry skin can also reduce the chance of irritation, as damp skin can increase penetration and potency. If you've already overdone it, the solution is to go back to basics. Stop all actives immediately. Switch to a simple routine of a gentle cleanser and a barrier-repairing moisturiser containing ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, or squalane. Give your skin a few weeks to heal before slowly reintroducing one active at a time.
