What the FSSAI Inspection Uncovered
During an inspection in June, officials from the FSSAI reported discovering 'serious food safety violations' at the Andaz Delhi property. The findings were extensive, pointing to significant lapses in hygiene and storage protocols. Among the most startling
discoveries was approximately 87 kg of expired sweets, which were subsequently discarded on the spot. Inspectors also found expired cake bases and bread packets. The issues went beyond expired products. The FSSAI noted evidence of pest activity, including cockroaches near freezers, flies, and mosquitoes in kitchen areas. Further deficiencies included the improper segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, with cutting boards for both being stored together, poor sanitation, and inadequate hygiene practices among food handlers. Structural issues were also flagged, such as chillers being located between two bathrooms with exhaust fans venting into the chiller section. Following the inspection, the FSSAI collected various food samples for laboratory analysis, including ghee, mayonnaise, honey, and masoor dal, with further action pending the results.
The Hotel's Official Response
In response to the FSSAI's notice, a spokesperson for Andaz Delhi affirmed that guest health and safety are their highest priority. The hotel acknowledged the inspection and stated that it had fully cooperated with the authorities, providing all requested information. In a statement, the hotel confirmed it had reviewed the observations shared by the FSSAI and subsequently 'reinforced its food safety and hygiene practices'. Andaz Delhi has submitted a detailed action-taken report to the regulator, outlining the corrective measures implemented to address the non-compliances. The hotel's management emphasized their commitment to maintaining the highest standards and working transparently with regulatory bodies to uphold guest trust.
The Role of the Food Safety Watchdog
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the country's apex body responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety. Its mandate allows it to conduct inspections of any food business operator to ensure compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act. The recent notices issued to Andaz Delhi and another five-star hotel, JW Marriott, are part of a broader crackdown by the regulator on food safety violations across the country. This intensified drive aims to ensure that all establishments, regardless of their price point or reputation, adhere to statutory hygiene and safety standards. By making its findings public, the FSSAI not only holds businesses accountable but also empowers consumers with information, reinforcing the idea that no establishment is above scrutiny when it comes to public health.
A Wake-Up Call for the Hospitality Industry
The findings at a premier luxury hotel like Andaz Delhi serve as a stark reminder that a high price point does not automatically guarantee impeccable safety standards. This incident has sent ripples through the hospitality industry, highlighting the critical importance of consistent and rigorous internal audits in addition to regulatory checks. For consumers, it underscores the necessity of being vigilant and aware that even the most reputable brands can have lapses. The FSSAI's public action puts pressure on the entire sector to re-evaluate and strengthen their operational protocols, from supplier verification to daily kitchen management. The expectation is clear: whether it's a local eatery or a five-star hotel, the fundamental promise of safe and hygienic food must be non-negotiable. This event reinforces that regulatory oversight is crucial for maintaining standards across the board.
