An Unblinking Eye in the Sky
So, what makes EOS-05 so special? The key is its orbit. Unlike most Earth observation satellites that circle the planet every 90 to 120 minutes in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO), EOS-05 operates from a Geosynchronous Orbit (GEO) approximately 36,000 kilometres
away. In this high perch, the satellite’s orbital speed matches the Earth's rotation, allowing it to remain over the Indian subcontinent continuously. While LEO satellites provide high-resolution images, they only pass over a specific location for a few minutes at a time, leaving large gaps in observation. EOS-05, however, acts as a persistent, unblinking eye, providing a constant stream of data over a vast area. This is the crucial difference that elevates it from a conventional satellite to a strategic national asset.
A New Vantage Point for India
The successful deployment of EOS-05 aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket is a moment of triumph, especially after the setback in 2021 when the nearly identical EOS-03 (also known as GISAT-1) was lost due to a launch vehicle failure. That mission was intended to be India's first GEO imaging satellite, and its loss created a multi-year capability gap. The recent success of EOS-05, therefore, is not just a technological achievement but also a testament to ISRO's resilience. Following the launch on September 4, 2026, ISRO performed a series of complex orbit-raising manoeuvres. By September 7, the satellite had successfully reached its final geosynchronous orbit, with all its systems functioning normally. This achievement establishes a long-awaited capability for India's space program, placing it in a select group of nations with advanced GEO imaging technology.
From Disaster Management to National Security
The applications of a satellite like EOS-05 are vast and transformative. Its ability to provide near real-time imagery makes it an invaluable tool for disaster management. It can monitor the rapid development of cyclones, track the spread of forest fires, and provide crucial data during floods, enabling quicker and more effective response efforts. Beyond civilian uses, the strategic importance of EOS-05 cannot be overstated. The satellite will provide continuous surveillance over India's borders and maritime areas, enhancing national security. While ISRO has clarified that it is not a 'spy satellite' in the conventional sense, its persistent monitoring capabilities offer a significant advantage for observing areas of interest.
