What Prompted the FSSAI Action?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed CG Foods India to halt the production of its 'veg bhujia namkeen' products. This directive followed an inspection of the company's manufacturing facility in Ajmer, Rajasthan, which
uncovered several serious violations. According to the FSSAI, the action was taken in response to findings of unsafe processing, unlicensed manufacturing of certain bhujia variants, and predated packaging. This was not a routine check with minor notes, but a targeted enforcement action based on significant compliance failures, leading to the seizure of over 32,000 kg of stock.
Specific Violations Uncovered
The details released by the FSSAI paint a concerning picture of the practices at the facility. Inspectors reportedly found that broken noodles, collected from the factory floor, were being re-processed into bhujia products without undergoing proper heat treatment. This raises significant hygiene concerns. Furthermore, the FSSAI identified that certain bhujia variants, namely 'Wai-Wai MaMa' and 'Wai-Wai Mama Punte', were being manufactured without the necessary license, a direct violation of the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006. Investigators also discovered the use of predated packaging and detained 1,925 boxes of expired finished goods, pointing to severe lapses in quality control and traceability.
The Role of FSSAI in Food Safety
For many consumers, the FSSAI is a logo on a package, but its role is far more critical. Established under the FSS Act of 2006, the FSSAI is the country's main regulatory body responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety. Its mandate includes setting science-based standards for food items, regulating their manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale, and ensuring that food sold to consumers is safe and wholesome. Actions like the one against CG Foods are a key part of its enforcement function, which involves conducting inspections, collecting samples for lab testing, and taking legal action against businesses that fail to comply with safety norms.
Beyond One Company: A Broader Trend
While the action against CG Foods, maker of the popular Wai-Wai noodles, is notable, it is part of a wider trend of increased scrutiny by food safety authorities across India. In recent months, state-level food and drug administrations have launched crackdowns on eateries, online food platforms, and manufacturers for a range of violations, from poor hygiene to the sale of unsafe items. This heightened vigilance reflects a growing emphasis on preventative public health and empowering consumers. FSSAI's CEO has recently highlighted the importance of combining regulation with consumer education to help people make informed choices about the food they eat.
What Should Consumers Do?
News of this nature can be unsettling for anyone who enjoys packaged snacks. However, it's also a sign that the regulatory system is working to hold manufacturers accountable. For consumers, the key takeaway is to remain vigilant. Always check for the FSSAI license number on the packaging, which indicates the business is registered with the regulator. Pay attention to manufacturing and expiry dates, and be wary of damaged packaging or products that seem off in taste or smell. While the FSSAI has ordered a production stop for the specific products in question, consumers can use this as a reminder to be mindful of their food choices and trust brands that demonstrate a clear commitment to quality and transparency. Regulatory oversight is ultimately a positive for public health.
