For instance, AI is already helping to accelerate drug discovery, create hyper-personalised education and customer experiences, and make agricultural practices more efficient. In India, with its advanced digital public infrastructure and a massive young workforce, AI is seen not just as a tool for innovation but as a strategic enabler for solving pressing socio-economic challenges in healthcare, finance, and public services.
A Widening Governance Gap
While businesses and governments are rushing to adopt AI, the frameworks to govern it are lagging dangerously behind. This 'governance gap' is the central risk highlighted by recent global analysis. One 2026 report found that while 88% of organisations used AI in some capacity, only 8% had a comprehensive governance framework in place. This gap isn't just theoretical; it has measurable consequences. AI-related incidents, from data breaches to production issues, rose by 55% in 2025 alone. The risks are manifold: algorithmic bias reinforcing societal inequalities, a lack of transparency in automated decision-making, data privacy violations, and the potential for large-scale job displacement. Furthermore, the rise of AI-generated disinformation poses a direct threat to democratic processes and social cohesion.
The Tightrope Walk for Policymakers

Experts argue that India needs to plug gaps in its current legal systems rather than necessarily creating entirely new laws, focusing on a risk-based approach to regulation.
