Inspired by the Spirit of Exploration
Tata Motors has launched new top-tier variants for its popular Harrier and Safari SUVs, dubbed the 'Discovery' editions. This isn't just a sticker job; it's a comprehensive cosmetic and feature upgrade designed to appeal to buyers seeking a more distinctive
and luxurious experience. The 'Discovery' theme is all about invoking a sense of adventure and sophistication. Positioned above the already well-equipped 'Accomplished' variants, these new editions serve as the pinnacle of their respective line-ups, bundling exclusive design elements with a host of modern technology.
Distinctive Exterior Styling
The most immediate differentiator for the Discovery editions is the exclusive 'Seaweed Green' body colour. This deep, earthy tone is complemented by contrasting blacked-out elements, including the roof, grille, and alloy wheels, creating a rugged yet elegant stance. Subtle 'Discovery' badges on the fenders and tailgate further distinguish these models from their standard counterparts. While the overall silhouette of the Harrier and Safari remains unchanged, these stylistic choices effectively elevate their road presence, making them stand out in a sea of SUVs. The look is assertive without being overly aggressive, targeting a mature buyer who appreciates understated class.
A Cabin Refined for the Journey
Inside, the Discovery theme continues with an exclusive interior treatment. The cabin features a dual-tone brown and black upholstery with unique stitching patterns that echo the adventurous spirit. The dashboard is adorned with new trim inserts, adding to the premium feel. Functionality gets a significant boost as well. These variants come loaded with features that were previously optional or part of other special editions. This includes a large 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a premium JBL sound system, and ventilated front seats—a must-have for Indian summers. For the Safari, the popular six-seater configuration with captain's chairs in the middle row is a standard highlight, enhancing its credentials as a comfortable long-distance tourer.
Proven Power, Unchanged Performance
Under the bonnet, things remain familiar. The Discovery editions are powered by the same tried-and-tested engines available in the rest of the Harrier and Safari range. This means buyers can choose between the 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine, known for its robust torque and highway performance, and the recently introduced 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that offers a smoother, more refined urban driving experience. Both engines are available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The decision to stick with the existing powertrains is a practical one, ensuring reliability and keeping development costs in check while focusing the 'Discovery' package on aesthetics and features.
Pricing and Market Position
As the new range-toppers, the Discovery editions command a premium over the existing variants. The price increase is justified by the exclusive colour, bespoke interior, and the inclusion of several high-end features as standard. These variants are strategically positioned to compete with the top-end trims of rivals like the Mahindra XUV700 and Hyundai Alcazar. By offering a factory-customised look and feel, Tata aims to capture the imagination of buyers who might otherwise spend money on aftermarket modifications. It's a move to provide a complete, premium package straight from the showroom floor.
