Gartner's Bombshell Forecast
According to the latest forecast from technology research firm Gartner, the AI boom is dramatically reshaping where technology money is flowing. The firm projects that worldwide IT spending will surge to nearly $6.4 trillion in 2026, a massive 14.2% jump
from 2025. The single biggest driver of this acceleration is the unprecedented investment in AI. The sharpest growth is expected in the data centre systems category, which is forecast to skyrocket by an astonishing 62.5% in 2026 to reach $822 billion. This highlights a clear pivot away from slower-growing areas like consumer devices and traditional IT services toward the heavy-duty infrastructure required to run complex AI models.
What Is AI Infrastructure?
When we talk about AI infrastructure, it's more than just the software you interact with. This category refers to the physical and cloud-based nuts and bolts that make AI possible. Think of it in layers. At the bottom are powerful, specialised servers packed with graphics processing units (GPUs) from companies like Nvidia, essential for training and running large language models. Then there's the spending on data centres themselves—the buildings, cooling systems, and networking equipment. Another critical component is Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), where companies rent computing power from hyperscale cloud providers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Gartner predicts IaaS spending will also see a massive 29.3% jump in 2026, underlining the trend of companies renting their AI muscle instead of building it all from scratch.
The Engine Behind the Spending Spree
The primary catalyst for this gold rush is the generative AI revolution. Training models like those behind ChatGPT or creating enterprise-specific AI agents requires computational power on a scale never seen before. Gartner analysts have called the buildout of this capacity "the largest infrastructure project ever attempted by humanity." In 2024, AI servers were already expected to account for nearly 60% of total server spending by hyperscalers. This demand is creating a ripple effect. The power consumption of AI-optimised servers is growing exponentially compared to conventional servers, putting immense pressure on global energy grids and cooling technologies. This hardware is so power-hungry that by 2027, Gartner expects AI servers to consume more electricity globally than all conventional servers combined.
The Indian Opportunity and Challenge
For India, this global trend presents both a significant opportunity and a considerable challenge. The nation's data centre market is expanding rapidly, with large domestic conglomerates and global hyperscalers investing in multi-gigawatt campuses to serve sovereign AI initiatives and enterprise demand. Initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission and partnerships between global tech giants and local IT incumbents are designed to create a competitive AI ecosystem. However, this rapid growth comes with hurdles. India's data centre capacity is projected to expand dramatically by 2030, but this will also increase the strain on the country's power grid and water resources. Experts note that power availability is a significant constraint for AI data centres, which consume vastly more energy than traditional facilities. Successfully navigating these infrastructure challenges will be key to India capitalizing on the AI boom.

The massive capital expenditures from tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta are transforming their business models. These historically "asset-light" software and advertising companies are becoming massive infrastructure players, spending hundreds of billions of dollars annually to stay competitive in the AI race. While this investment is starting to generate real revenue—Google Cloud and Microsoft's AI services are showing strong growth—it also pressures profitability. Investors are watching closely to see if the returns on these enormous infrastructure bets can justify the cost.
