The Rise of a Viral Food Rule
The term 'double carbing' refers to eating two sources of starchy carbohydrates in one meal—think pasta with a side of garlic bread, or a chapati with a potato curry. In recent years, social media influencers and wellness blogs have popularised the idea
that this practice hinders weight loss and metabolic health. The logic presented is that combining two starches leads to an excessive carbohydrate and calorie load, causing a rapid spike in blood sugar and insulin, followed by an energy crash and increased fat storage. While this sounds plausible and makes for a simple, memorable rule, it overlooks the complex and elegant way our bodies handle meals.
The Power of Protein and Fat
A meal is rarely just one or two macronutrients. The real magic happens when you look at the entire plate. Adding protein and healthy fats to a carbohydrate-rich meal fundamentally changes how your body processes it. Protein and fat slow down gastric emptying, which means the food stays in your stomach longer. This, in turn, slows the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, leading to a more gradual, gentle rise in blood sugar instead of a sharp spike. This is why an apple (a carb) eaten with peanut butter (protein and fat) has a much lower glycemic impact than an apple eaten alone. So, a plate of pasta paired with a chicken breast and a salad with olive oil dressing is metabolically very different from a plate of plain pasta.
Not All Carbs Are Created Equal
The 'double carbing' rule also fails to distinguish between different types of carbohydrates. Nutrition science uses the Glycemic Index (GI) to rank foods based on how quickly they raise blood sugar levels. High-GI foods like white bread cause a faster spike than low-GI foods like lentils. When you combine foods, you alter the overall GI of the meal. Pairing a high-GI food with a low-GI, high-fibre food can buffer the overall effect. The problem isn't necessarily having two carbs on one plate, but rather having two highly refined, low-fibre carbs without any protein, fat, or vegetables to balance them out. A meal of dal (lentils, a low-GI carb) with rice (a higher-GI carb) is a classic example that provides a more complete protein profile and varied nutrients.
The Bigger Picture: Your Overall Plate
Ultimately, fixating on a single rule like 'double carbing' misses the forest for the trees. The human digestive system is designed to handle mixed meals containing fats, proteins, and carbohydrates together. In fact, many vitamins and minerals require other nutrients for proper absorption. Rather than fearing food combinations, a better approach is to focus on building a balanced plate. Aim to include a source of lean protein, plenty of non-starchy vegetables for fibre, and a source of healthy fats in each meal. This combination naturally helps regulate blood sugar, improves satiety (the feeling of fullness), and ensures you get a wider array of essential nutrients. It encourages a shift from a mindset of restriction to one of addition and balance.
