First flagged off in 2019, the Vande Bharat Express is a testament to the 'Make in India' initiative. These semi-high-speed, self-propelled trainsets are designed and manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. While capable of hitting speeds
up to 183 km/h in trials, their operational speed is typically capped at a maximum of 160 km/h due to track limitations. But speed is only part of the story. These trains feature modern amenities like large panoramic windows, bio-vacuum toilets, Wi-Fi, and a GPS-based passenger information system, all aimed at elevating the passenger experience. Part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, the train connects Jammu Tawi and Katra with Srinagar, drastically cutting travel time from over six hours by road to just under five hours by rail. The journey is a showcase of incredible engineering and natural splendor, passing through numerous tunnels and across bridges, including the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge. The train passes through vibrant green tea gardens, dense forests, and crosses the mighty Brahmaputra river over the Saraighat Bridge, offering memorable views. For decades, travellers have sought out the romance of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways: the Darjeeling 'Toy Train', the Kalka-Shimla Railway, and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway.
