By supplementing with creatine, you increase your muscles' stores of this energy source, which allows you to perform better, lift heavier, and get more out of your workouts. The Science of the Initial Weight Gain
So, why does the scale jump up within the first week of taking creatine? The answer lies in a simple scientific principle: osmosis. Creatine is an 'osmotically active' substance, which means it attracts and draws water to it. When you supplement, creatine levels in your muscle cells increase. To balance this higher concentration, your body pulls water from other areas into your muscle cells. Instead, you can simply take a standard maintenance dose of 3-5 grams daily from the start. Your muscles will still become fully saturated, but it will happen more gradually over three to four weeks, making the water retention less noticeable. Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water can also help your body manage fluid balance and reduce any feelings of bloating.

The initial water weight is a temporary and transient effect. It tends to stabilise after the first few weeks of use.
