A Grand Arrival, Sans Price Tag
In a move designed to build anticipation among luxury SUV buyers, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has officially listed the new Discovery Landmark Edition for the Indian market. The vehicle now features on the company's website, complete with details of its exclusive
specifications. However, the price remains unannounced, a classic pre-launch strategy to generate buzz. This new variant will be positioned as a mid-level offering, slotting between the entry-level 'S' trim and the top-of-the-line 'Tempest' edition. The listing signals that an official launch and price reveal are imminent, putting potential buyers and competitors on high alert.
What Makes the Landmark Special?
The Landmark Edition is all about exclusive cosmetic enhancements that celebrate the Discovery's rich heritage. The most prominent feature is the exclusive Tasman Blue metallic paint, a colour that pays homage to the Clearwater Blue of the original 1989 Discovery. This is complemented by a Graphite Atlas finish on the grille, fender vents, and 'Discovery' badging. The vehicle also features Carpathian Grey skid plates and new 21-inch alloy wheels finished in Dark Agate Grey. Inside, the cabin gets dark grey brushed aluminium trim, Tech Velour fabric on the doors and dashboard, and unique 'Landmark' branding with a mountain logo on the tread plates and puddle lamps. A panoramic sunroof and a centre console refrigerator are also part of the package, adding to its appeal for family adventures.
Familiar Power Under the Bonnet
While the aesthetics are new, the powertrain remains a familiar and potent unit. The Discovery Landmark Edition will continue to be powered by the 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine. This engine is known for its smooth performance, delivering 350hp and a substantial 700Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Land Rover's sophisticated Terrain Response 2 system remains standard, ensuring the Discovery maintains its legendary off-road capability. With a water-wading depth of 900mm and a towing capacity of 3,500kg, the Landmark Edition is as ready for adventure as any of its siblings.
The Strategic Silence on Pricing
The decision to list the Landmark Edition without a price is a calculated marketing tactic. It allows JLR to gauge customer interest while creating a sense of exclusivity and anticipation. For context, the current Land Rover Discovery range in India starts from approximately ₹1.25 crore and goes up to ₹1.39 crore (ex-showroom). Given that the Landmark Edition is positioned as a mid-tier variant, its price is expected to fall comfortably within this bracket, likely carrying a premium over the base 'S' model due to its unique cosmetic and feature additions. The final price will be crucial in determining its competitiveness in a crowded market.
Navigating a Competitive Landscape
The Land Rover Discovery operates in a fiercely competitive segment of the Indian luxury car market. Its primary rivals include the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5 and X7, Audi Q7, and the Volvo XC90. Each of these competitors offers a strong combination of luxury, performance, and technology. The introduction of the Landmark Edition is a strategic move by Land Rover to keep the Discovery lineup fresh and appealing. By highlighting its heritage and adding desirable features, JLR aims to attract buyers who value both brand legacy and modern luxury, strengthening its position against its German and Swedish counterparts.
