Train travel between Tamil Nadu and Kerala is set to become a breathtaking experience. Southern Railway has introduced a Vistadome coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, promising panoramic views of the Western Ghats like never before.
A Window to the Western Ghats
Imagine travelling
through misty mountains and lush green valleys with an unobstructed, panoramic view. That is the experience the Vistadome coach aims to provide. These specially designed carriages feature wide glass windows, rotatable seats, and a see-through glass roof. The seats can swivel 360 degrees, allowing passengers to face the direction of the best scenery, while the glass roof, which can be switched from transparent to translucent, offers a unique perspective of the sky and landscape. With a capacity for 42 passengers, these air-conditioned executive coaches are equipped with modern amenities, including pushback chairs and contemporary toilet facilities, transforming the journey itself into a primary attraction.
The Scenic Sengottai-Punalur Route
The Madurai-Guruvayur Express travels through one of Southern Railway's most picturesque corridors, the Sengottai-Punalur ghat section. This stretch is renowned for its natural beauty, winding through the Western Ghats, passing dense forests, verdant valleys, and several tunnels. A major highlight for passengers is crossing the historic Pathimoonu Kannara Bridge, also known as the 13-Arch Bridge, an engineering marvel near Aryankavu that offers stunning photographic opportunities. The route also provides access to popular tourist spots like the Palaruvi, Kazhuthurutty, and Courtallam waterfalls, as well as the Thenmala Eco-Tourism Centre. This journey connects two major pilgrimage sites: the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai and the Guruvayur Temple in Kerala, adding a spiritual dimension to the scenic travel.
Schedule and Trial Period Details
Southern Railway is operating this new service on a temporary trial basis to assess passenger response. The Vistadome coach is attached to Train No. 16327, departing from Madurai on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This trial period for the Madurai departure runs from October 22, 2026, to January 15, 2027. For the return journey, the coach is attached to Train No. 16328, departing from Guruvayur on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. The trial for the Guruvayur departure is scheduled from October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027. Passengers should note that the coach is not available on all days of the week and must plan their travel according to this specific schedule.
Fares and How to Book Your Seat
The fare for the Vistadome experience varies depending on the distance of travel. The price for the entire journey from Madurai to Guruvayur is approximately ₹1,875 per person. Fares to intermediate stations are also available, for instance, the journey from Madurai to Punalur costs around ₹1,010. Advance reservations are open and can be made through authorised Indian Railways booking channels, including the IRCTC website and mobile apps like RailOne. When booking, passengers should look for the special class code 'EV' for Executive Vistadome coach. Given the high demand, with initial services reportedly selling out quickly, it is advisable to book tickets well in advance.
The Future of Scenic Rail Travel
The introduction of the Vistadome coach on this route marks a significant step in promoting rail tourism in the region. First introduced in India in 2017 on the Visakhapatnam–Araku Valley route, Vistadome coaches have become incredibly popular among tourists for the immersive experience they offer. The current service on the Madurai–Guruvayur Express is a trial run, and its future continuation or expansion will likely depend on the feedback and demand from passengers during this period. The initial response has been overwhelmingly positive, suggesting a bright future for such scenic–focused train journeys in South India. For now, travellers have a limited window until mid–January 2027 to experience this unique journey through the heart of the Western Ghats.
