A New Sentinel in the Sky
On September 4, 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Earth Observation Satellite-05 (EOS-05) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. Carried aboard the powerful GSLV-F17 rocket, the 2,367-kilogram satellite is a state-of-the-art
spacecraft designed to be India's first imaging satellite operating from a geosynchronous orbit. After a series of precise orbit-raising manoeuvres, the satellite settled into its intended orbit nearly 36,000 kilometres above the Earth. This mission is a significant morale boost and a return to form for ISRO, marking its first major successful launch of 2026 and overcoming the setback of a similar mission failure in 2021.
The Geosynchronous Advantage
What makes this satellite so special is its orbit. Most Earth observation satellites are in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), circling the globe every 90-100 minutes. This is useful for building a global picture over time, but it means they can only see a specific location for a few minutes during each pass. EOS-05, however, is in a geosynchronous orbit. At an altitude of about 35,786 km, its orbital period matches Earth's rotation. This allows it to hover over the Indian subcontinent continuously, like a fixed security camera in the sky. Instead of getting fleeting glimpses, ISRO can now monitor vast areas of interest in near-real-time, a game-changing capability.
A Powerful Toolkit for a Changing Nation
The ability to provide frequent, wide-area imagery has profound implications for India. One of the most critical applications is in disaster management. The satellite can provide continuous monitoring of developing weather systems like cyclones and track the progression of floods and forest fires, enabling faster and more effective responses. For agriculture, it can monitor crop health, assess drought conditions, and help manage water resources more efficiently. The satellite's advanced imaging payloads, which include multispectral and hyperspectral sensors, will allow for detailed observation across various sectors.
Strengthening Strategic and Security Interests
Beyond its civilian uses, EOS-05 provides a significant boost to India's strategic autonomy. The satellite's persistent gaze over the Indian subcontinent and its surrounding regions is invaluable for national security. It allows for constant monitoring of remote border areas and maritime zones, enhancing situational awareness.
